Just wondering how I would do this. We've got french doors leading to our deck and we'd like to remove one of the panes and install a doggie door. I've looked online and some sites say you can't, but my sister's house has one. It was installed before they owned the house, so she was no help in directions.

Can we just remove the pane (or score the glass and remove) and go from there?

Thanks!

if your doors are the modern variety,, its one big pane of insulated glass,,,, dont try andcut into it, or it will damage the entire door,,, i would recommend having hte pet door installed through the wall adjacent to the french doors instead. either way this is not a diy type job.

How was it done at your sis's house? If you have the same type of door, it should be fairly easy for a carpenter to replicate by looking at pictures. Maybe take lots of pics & go to Home Depot or a glass door place & just pick their brains for suggestions. :teeth:

That's like going to your butcher and asking him for advice on brain surgery  ! They've never given me the correct advice!!!

We have a pet door in our penninsula so our dog can't eat the cat food lol. Sorry, I can't help you with your french doors, maybe a local carpenter can help you out.

How's the job going??

Did anyone else read the title as "Put Dog in French Door"? :rotfl:

We didn't really have a door that would work for a dog door and bought one of these http://www.petdoors.com/thermosash.htm for a window. Works really nice and easy to install.

How does your dog get in and out of the window? Do you have something for the dog to climb up and down on?

I just read that website janette provided (thanks!!) and learned that my glass is tempered...meaning it'll shatter like a windshield, not with clean edges. Unfortunately, I don't have a plan B...I don't want to cut a hole in the wall. With half a foot of drywall, insulation and brick, it seems like a huge undertaking. Not to mention an eyesore for when we sell. Now what? *sigh*

Disneymcgraw, the job is going great! I've had the last two weeks off, so I sure can't complain!! Thanks for asking!

My dogs could get out the window ok since we have low windowsills, but the drop into the backyard from the second story family room would be rough! :rotfl: And of course they would have hard time jumping back in the window. ;)

Seriously, though, what a neat thing for someone with the right window, sans a big drop...

We have low windows about 12 inches off the ground but our older Bichon was having a little trouble so we ended up building her a step.

Most people don't even notice the dog door, it's behind a chair and looks like part of the window.
