I have a friend who lives in Memphis that I haven't talked to in a while. She called a minute ago and mentioned to me how two of her cats had run off about 2 weeks ago.

Now she has had these kitties for years, these aren't cats that just wandered up lately. She just met a new boyfriend and its like nothing matters to her but him!

It just makes me so mad. These two cats were INSIDE cats, they don't know one single thing about being outside. One of her wild children probably let them out and she was just to busy with the new boyfriend to bother with trying to find them.

I would FREAK, do you hear me, FREAK if one of my cats got out! You know if they were outside cats to begin with that KNEW about the outside and were used to coming in and out then it would be a different story. These two have always been inside though, they have never had to hunt for food or water.....uggghhhh I guess I'm just to much of an animal lover but that just made me so angry!

I have a friend who is like that. She's an idiot! Totally ticked me off! Last year in end of December she had to move to a new apartment and couldn't find anyone to take her cat. Rather than take her to a shelter or something like that, she just threw the cat outside to fend for herself! The excuse was that my friend would rather *believe* the cat was fine out on her own than was put to sleep in a shelter! The worse part about this story is that I volunteer for a cat rescue organization!!!!! She didn't tell me about it until after the fact! Fortunately, another one of her friends was able to find the cat and took her in.

Now for the part that really really angers me.....she just adopted 2 new cats from a shelter a few weeks ago with her new boyfriend that she is moving with to another state! I wonder how long those poor cats will last!

Our inside cat got out once and we really did freak. DH was out driving around at 1:30 in the morning trying to find him, and DD and I were walking the streets calling his name. Thank God DH found him on the next street (he was covered in grease). But yeah, it would make me angry too. Kitties that live indoors don't have a clue how to live outside.:(

Poor kitties. I would be hunting them down and putting a lost kitty ad in the paper, signs, everything. I would freak if I lost The King or The Princess.:(

Had a co-worker like that too. She loved animals more than human beings (her exact quote). This is a girl who can't go to the humane society without crying, etc.. You get the picture.

She had 2 inside cats that she was so in love with. Spoiled these cats silly... it was all she talked about at work.

Then one day... she decided she just had to have a dog. So, we figured she'd get a dog from the humane society because she wanted to save all the animals from there. Turns out she bought a chihuahua for $300!

Then to make things worse, the cats hated the dogs and vice versa. The cats wouldn't come out of the basement, one cat kept spraying... and she didn't care one bit. She didn't pay the cats one bit of attention, all she would do is play with the dog. Everything was for the dog.

Long story short, one cat is now outdoors, one cat confined to the basement, and the dog has full roam of the house, and all she can talk about is the dog!

Now that makes me mad:mad:

Those stories make me angry too.

We had some neighbors, when I was growing up, that rented a house across the street. One day they uped and moved.
They also left 5 dogs and a couple cats. We noticed the dogs when we saw a couple of them on the roof of the porch a few days later.
No one knew what to do and the Animal control would not go on private property to get them. I went in the house, walking through a foot of stuff on the floor, clothes, you name it. I got the dogs inside and then out of the house. Animal control then agreed to come and get them. We found a puppy a couple days later and I found it a home.

We have 3 cats and 1 dog. The eldest cat wants to be an outside cat so bad. She will sit in the screen porch and meow if we are out in the yard. The only time we ever let her outside is if someone is outside watching her. the other 2 cats are happy to be inside, they don't even like going on the screen porch.

Sounds like my neighbor, threw her two declawed cats to live out under the deck. They were full of mats and ticks. One ran away, the other got bit by a wild animal. Since she didn't get them their rabies shots it would have to be quarantined for 6 months. She said I'll put it to sleep, I can't put up with that.

I hate stories like this. Some people seem to think animals are "disposable". They are cute when new and little but worthless when they no longer fit the owners lifestyle. A few people just don't consider the care an animal actually needs and get it because it's in fashion (remember all the people who got Dalmations when the movie came out only to send them to the shelters after when they were no longer "cute").

An indoor cat can't easily survive outside, let alone one that does go out. Around here we have plenty of animals that attack cats and small dogs outside. Our cat used to love to go outside but only on a leash. We trained him early and he got used to it. It was never cruel to leash him. He slipped out the door a couple times and was outside for two days one time. We posted notes throughout the neighborhood. He came back on his own, tired and messy and never attempted an escape again.

These stories make me sad.:( If you have an indoor kitty and don't want it anymore, trust me someone else DOES want it. Indoor kitties are just not equipped to handle the outdoors. Honestly, I can't imagine having anything BUT an indoor kitty - they are almost human!:p

We are definitely NOT in danger of running out of stupid people ANY time soon. So much for our so-called "civilized" society.

I had a Persian who'd meow to be let out. I'd go out with him into the back yard, and this is how it would go: he'd creep along the grass, eyes big and huge, watching everything. Then a bird would twitter or a bug would fly near him, and he'd turn right around and, very frightened, creep back to the door and meow to be let in. It all took about 10 seconds. We went through this process a couple of times a year. He was a silly cat.

Maybe you could get a harness and leash for your oldest cat and take her for walks? Some cats like it.

::yes::

Although I've never been able to find it, I'm sure there's a sign on my house somewhere that says drop your unwanted, abused animals here. :( Most of our throw aways came from the morons that lived behind us (they are gone now, thank goodness!). Currently I have four of their disposable cats.

I've taken in beat up, starving cats, brought them to the Vet's and cried when I had to have them put to sleep because they had FIV or Feline Leukemia. I've scraped them off the road that runs by my house when they've gotten hit by cars. I've taken in Mother cats who have had or were about to have kittens. Gave them a safe, clean room of their own with good food and found homes for the babies and sometimes the Mom too. Those we've kept, got their shots and were neutered.

I have NO sympathy for people who do not take care of their pets. They should be thankful that it's not up to me to write and enforce the laws about animal cruelty.

Last summer we thought we had seen the last of the strays. Mr. Floppie was here for several years. One sad day he got hit by a car. :( He was not use to people and despite several years of being near me, he would only suffer being touch. I finally was able to trap him and bring him to a Vet. We would have paid to have his tail amputated (from the car hitting him) and having internal injuries treated (he was bleeding internally) but we couldn't fix the fact that he had FIV and FL. We had this sweet boy put to sleep. And I thought well maybe that's the last of the wanderers.

But no! Now we've got another one named Dad Cat. He's a love who craves attention and affection. But I can't put my cats in harms way and bring in a cat that most likely has FIV. So I feed him and provide him with an outside shelter. And I hope that just maybe he has a home and only comes to visit.

Sorry for the rant on this but having numerous cats put down over the years has been emotionally draining. It should never happen. If you're going to get a cat or dog then keep them inside and love them! That's all they ask.

It's so horrible how some people are ya know? If anyone wants to help about this, you don't even have to take an animal in. Try calling your local animal shelter and seeing if they need any of your old towels, sheets, blankets, stuffed animals. Most shelters are ALWAYS in need of these things. Another one is if you have the time, donate it to help work with your local pet shelter. A lot of shelters are also looking for help!

I try and donate at least 4-5 towels a month to animal shelters if I can!

My feelings exactly, especially with cats. I was allowed only outdoor cats for most of my childhood, and I lost each and every one of them to cars or neighborhood dogs. Heartbreaking. I think cats have such a hard time fending for themselves outside, even if they are loved and well cared for otherwise. I will NEVER have another outdoor cat now. My kitty is perfectly content in my apartment and I can't imagine letting him loose ""out there."

Dogs, however, I think are fine out there as long as they have a big fenced in yard to romp in. What kills me is seeing dogs tethered to a pole in a yard all day long because there's no fence. :(

Man..these type of people tick me off!

We had someone bring a cat into the clinic last Sat. It was 12 years old, had feline leukemia, had been in a cat fight cause he let it out to run the streets!!

Didn't he realize he was infecting the rest of the outdoor population of cats with FELV? What an idiot.

At any rate another cat had almost torn off it's ear. It was such a sweet cat but was very, very sick.

The "Mom" came home, and decided to put this poor cat to sleep.

She was crying yesterday when she picked it up.
I felt bad for her, but thought, it would have been so much better if you left him inside.

We've had 3 dogs, all adopted from the local animal shelter. Our newest "baby" is a 2-yr old lab/rott/something mix, and he is just the sweetest thing! The shelter said they found him as a stray; the shelter keeps them for 10 days before putting them up for adoption to give the owners time to claim them. Charlie is the best---he was already housebroken, knew some basic commands, playful, doesn't chew on stuff he's not supposed to. I've said many, many times that I just can't believe that he'd run off and his owners wouldn't try to get him back! You can just bet if he ever gets away from us, I'll be calling every shelter within 50 miles, putting ads in the paper, you name it.
