"We succeeded in taking that picture [from deep space], and, if you look at it, you see a dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.

The earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and in triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner of the dot. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity — in all this vastness — there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us. It's been said that astronomy is a humbling, and I might add, a character-building experience. To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."

its the idea that we are so small and trivial when you look at the big picture. that all of the catastrophes and wars and bloodshed and even the good things that shook lives and our world, only happened on that tiny dot in a cloud of dust.

I 100% couldn't care less about what everything that happened on this Earth means in the broad sceme of things. It affects me, my family, and the human race so it IS important, regardless of how small it may look in a stupid irrelevant picture.

I say that a lot [in few and less technical words] but honestly I don't care.

I care about now. Right here. This place. Not the future way way way ahead of me. Not how big the universe is.

Just this. Me. Here.

Did you actually read the last part of the second paragraph of the quote? It basically says that we should act more kindly and compassionately to those around us and protect our only home, no matter how small.

i guess i read this differently than everyone else. I took it as showing us how small we are, but i never thought of it as undermining our personal events in life or anything like that. As far as we know so far, we are the most intelligent and advanced living things in that picture. We don't know what's out there. It's just showing us how complex one microscopic dot on a picture can be.

that is basically what it is saying. Carl Sagan is pointing out how incredibly complex our lives are, how complex we are and how very very very small we are compared to everything else. Man is an amazing creature. Carl also said to protect our home, even if it gets to the point where we are protecting it from ourselves

No. I honestly didn't read a word of it because I hadn't intended on responding. My response was more sprung off of Hannah's comment moreso than it was the original post.

You seemed upset in your response. I think you might think differently about it if you actually read the quote.

I just did. I wasn't upset at the quote or people's responses, per se, but the sort of things in the back of my mind brought up by the general ignorance of people fighting it. ...If that makes sense at all to anyone outside of my mind.

i think it is absolutley amazing that God created all of the stars and knows them all by name. I know some of you aren't Christians, but look at that picture, isn't it amazing?
we live in a huge universe on a tiny dot. But God still cares for us
i agree that we should all be kinder for each other
it's kind of pointless to fight over some dirt
i still can't get over that picture
There are millions of stars in the universe and that is most of what we see
imagine if we could see every star, every planet, everything
wouldn't it be amazing ?
i think it would be :goodvibes
