Personalizing Luggage

yellow duck tape on the sides.
that's what my family does anyhow.
try bright pink, that might work too ;)

Not much of personalizing, but more of easy identification...

I take thick, wired ribbon... and tie it around the handles. I have all different kinds... If we travel in Feb. I use hearts, March Shamrocks.. Makes it easy to identify..

Also, we flew from Boston to St.Lucia through Miami this winter and on the leg from Boston to Miami someone stole our friends carry on. Each couple packed 1 lg. suitcase which we checked, and one carry on with everything that we did not want to get lost by the airline. Due to planes loading passengers from the back to the front above carry on space was tight so we had to put our suitcases closer to the front of the plane. Ours was red with crazy ribbons on it and our friends was just plain black. While the plane was unloading in Miami we stayed seated while people in front of us grabbed bags, etc. when it was our turn to get up our friend noticed someone had stolen their suitcase! It was not an accident because their was not one left behind, nor was it ever turned in. The airlines said it could've been targeted because it was just plain black with no identifiying marks on it. If someone picked it up with the intention to steal it and you noticed and said "thats mine' they would just say sorry it looks like mine, and you wouldn't think much about it...

Be careful! There are some mean people out there.. So to make my long story longer... that is why I make it easily identifiable...

When we traveled to England, I put red duct tape on the sides of my suitcases. My current suitcases are green, and they stand out pretty well. I'll probably tie a ribbon on the handle for our trip to WDW. If I use my black duffle bag instead of the green suitcase, I'll definitely do something to personalize it--maybe some of the curling ribbon for packages in lots of colors!

You can use the brite thick PIPE CLEANERS at the craft stores on the handles as well.

I use some of the gift wrap ribbon, The kind that you can curl for bows. There is always some in the house and it is colorful and easy to tie on.

We stencil & paint ours -- not to many people walk off with a bag painted with pawprints all over it :rotfl2:

Last September we went to Disney with Friends.
Our red suitcase had ribbons tied neatly all over it, and of course it matched!
Our friends was a black suitcase which they had taken out of their attic a week before leaving. Did I forget to mention they have 2 orange cats? The cats made the top of their suitcase "their bed" for the week... That morning of the flight at 3am my friend was using a lint roller on the bag and then realized..... Who is going to want to take this bag with cat hair covering it! So she left it like that... :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I put 3 colors of electrical tape on my handles. My daughter and I packed backpacks for our carry ons' and put them under the seat.

I bought cute smiley :) face ribbon at the fabric store and tied a piece to each suitcase. We always see ours comming down the luggage belt and it makes us happy. :goodvibes

I've already put the yellow duck tape around the handles of every bag, but I think I'm gonna go ahead and stencil a big "M" on the front of every one.

When i went suitcase shopping i found a bag that was bright pink with dark polka dots on it. Not exactly my style. But boy does that baby stand out.

As to how to personalize it, I would definitely make my own luggage tag so that if its black you'll be able to see something different.

What kind of paint did you use? Also, did you do anything so it wouldn't run?

Bright-colored bandanas (the more unusual the color, the better, like yellow or pink or orange). I tie them to the handles of the suitcases.

Sooo funny! :rotfl: I have to do this EVERY time I go on vacation, as my suitcases are stores in the attic, which is my cat's favorite room in the house!! Green suitcase...white fur!!

I found a site last year that had bookmarks you could personalize. I found a bookmark we liked, personalized it and printed a few. I then cut them out, glued them back to back (made them 2 sided) and laminated them. I then punched a hole at the top and tied it onto the handle w/ red and yellow yarn.

Our luggage looked just like everyone else's except for the "tags". They were big, bright and easy to see.

I've edged all my duffle bags with the self adhesive fabric that you can get at the craft stores. It looks nicer than duct tape plus I'm not concerned about ribbon falling off. When we went to Disney last October, there was a mix-up with what flight I was coming in on. Magical Express had no problem spotting my bag without the Disney Tag. When the bag was delivered to French Quarter the tag actually read, black bag with polka dot trim. We joked for the whole trip how the whole Disney staff was probably on look out for the polka dotted duffle bag! :rotfl2:

I have neon pink laminated address tags on mine. I use a tie strap through the handle so I can see that puppy when it comes off the plane. My carry on also has a neon pink tag so I can spot it if someone "mistakenly" picks it up (altho I never leave my stuff alone!)

On one of our last trips to WDW I was in the gift shop at BWV and they had big, red "Mickey Head" luggage tags! ::MickeyMo Wow...I just couldn't resist. Our luggage is black and boy, can you see those tags coming!! It's great and it's MICKEY! :yay:

The single most effective method I have ever seen goes to a collegue of mine who travels more than 200 days a year for work. While this is too extreme for most (including me) there is no doubt it is effective. He has taken neon orange spray paint and painted a large X on the front and back of each of his bags. When ever I travel with him there is no doubt at all which bags are his :earsboy:
