So this got me thinking on threads asking for hotel recommendations when staying pre/post-cruise in Rome. I wanted to point out a very special place I found with my family that had some of the best REAL Roman pasta and isn't that diminished low-flavor pasta in the tourist trap areas. It's in the historic center along a very narrow road and not a very long walk from the Colosseum. In fact, just down the street from it, there's a nice gelato shop off the side of a square with a fountain at the center.
Google Maps, shows that it's a 9 minute walk. You will pass the gelato shop and square if you walk to al 42.

It doesn't look like much from the Street View, but that is totally deceiving. If anyone staying in Rome has the time while you are there, please make this a stop for dinner on one of your nights.
My original reply in another thread:
Not a hotel recommendation, but I do want to point out an AMAZING place to eat in Rome. This place was so AMAZING, my wife and I went back multiple times after I convinced her to try it the first time. This AMAZING place is just a tiny hole in the wall of a restaurant and not in the overly tourist trap areas. There was always a line of people waiting to eat there. It is in the center of Rome and not very far from the Colosseum that you could walk there without any trouble. It's called Al 42 by Pasta Chef Rione Monti. It's advertised as gourmet street food, and I can't say enough how AMAZING this place was. The manager spent time talking with us and explained that they don't have personal service, and then took the time to walk us through the entire menu, talk us through the ordering, food service process and serving ourselves our wine while helping us place an additional order. He then picked out a place for us to sit and showed us to our seats, while explaining how they don't have any service. The chef works there and the staff all very clearly love the business and care deeply for their craft and the success of their chef. If you have time, please, please, please make a point of eating there. I loved the carbonara plate and all the pasta is made fresh, in-house.

BTW, did I mention how much this place AMAZED me?
