Are there ANY discounts out there for people who use dvc or rent dvc points as far as discounts on tickets or food? I hear conflicting stories about discounts for people staying dvc? TIA for any input

Owners of DVC currently get a discounted AP and have some small discounts for food, etc. We also get free internet when staying on points.

These perks are for owners and are technically not available for renters. However, I have read that some renters were able to get them because their KTTW card said DVC and they were not asked to produce a DVC membership card.

However, not all KTTW cards are showing DVC any more so it may not be as easy. So, anyone who rents should not count on getting any discounts.

More and more locations are requesting the blue member ID card as proof of membership. Without that, no discount.

Something like the free Internet is typically coded on the reservation. If it's a stay on DVC points, the computers are set not to bill. When you first sign-on for Internet service, it specifically states that a charge of $12.95 per day will be applied, but that the fee is waived for DVC members.

However, there are occasional reports of members being erroneously billed for Internet service. The only way to get it rectified is to visit the front desk and present a member ID. But a renter won't have a member ID and may not be able to get the charges reversed. Even with the Internet service, you're taking a risk that the charges may show up on your statement and you will be obligated to pay.

The moral is you can always ask about discounts and try to get them applied when renting points. But don't go into it with the expectation of receiving any DVC member perks. If granted, consider it the proverbial icing on the cake.

Internet was $9.95 per day a couple of months ago. Did it go up to $12.95 or is that a typo?

There are perks for members, but those perks are not extended to anyone who compensates the member for a "rented" stay. If the member gifts a stay to someone, that guest maybe entitled to some DVC member perks, but what those are are few and far between.

Um...not that it matters but internet is not free to the owners. We pay the "telecommunications" bill for the resort as part of our maintenance fees. So it isn't a perk, we pay for it. :)

seriously... please don't rent DVC points with the idea you are intitled to perks... perks that have been taken away from original owners who purchased back in the 90's... and continue to keep dwindling as membership grow.. so NO; you don't get member perks! Your perk is renting the points from a member for a nice villa and probably paying far less than what Disney would charge for the room!

With the new 2011 computer system, here is the way for renters to find out if they will be charged for internet access. After you check in, charge something to your room (bottle of water or souvenir from the hotel gift shop will suffice). Then go to the concierge desk and ask for a printout of your room charges. The printout will have something on the top that says "DVC Member Indicator:" followed by either "Yes" or "No". If it says Yes, then you are good. Even after agreeing to the $9.95 fee when you sign on, it will not show up on your bill.

However, keep in mind the internet access is most likely wired. If you want wireless, bring a router from home or screw the whole Disney system and enable the Wi-Fi hot spot feature on your smart phone (~$1 per day for most carriers) and then cancel it on your way home. We do this every time we are asked to pay for internet access on the road. That includes Disney, even with free wired internet (DW likes wireless while in bed).

see, this is oneof the reasons we don't buy .not the most important one, but still.... the most imp. one being we are almost 55 and 57, and in 45 years we will be... well, you do the math;), I'm thinking, in Heaven.

anyways, the "rules" keep changing. and there's nothing to stop the rules from constantly changing, as far as I can see. some people bought when pool hopping to storm along bay was allowed. maintanence fees go up, resale rules change, etc etc.
we were kinda close to buying at one point.

Just to clarify....I used my worldmark timeshare to rent a DVC property. I did not rent points to get "perks" , as I am new to wdw, I was simply asking if there is any "discounts" out there for people who stay dvc. Since free dining etc. has come out that I am not able to partake of due to the fact that I am staying DVC. I knew that might be the case BUT thought I would pose the question since I do not know EVERTHING there is to know about wdw.

I weighed the options of free dining vs using my time share to stay dvc. I chose the dvc over the highly controversial "free dining"

Since I have 5 kids and live across the country it is still not cheap to visit wdw even using my timeshare....so I posed the question.

There is never free dining with a points stay, or any of the other WDTC package offers (buy 4/get 3, kids stay and play free, etc.).

DVC members (and renters) may add the full price dining plan without purchasing tickets, which can't be done by a regular guest, so that can be a savings.

The other member perks are just those listed above - discounted AP, a few restaurant discounts, free Internet, free laundry.
