Day 3 - DisneyQuest and Lost in Orlando.
So I wake up on Tuesday morning to, you guessed it - pouring rain. I run through my usual morning ritual - coffee, weather, SportsCenter. It looks like it's going to rain the majority of the day so it appears as if DisneyQuest would be a good call.
The kids have cereal and bagels, my wife and I get caffeined up, and we're out the door.
We head over to the reception area of Vistana Village, where they have one of those off-site ticket desks. There's a few people in line, but within a matter of minutes I get to a representative and I purchase our tix for DQ and our 2 day Disney tix. He tells me that I could probably save some money by talking to the guys over in Vacation Services, but after some brief questioning he affirms that I'll only save $$ by sitting through a timeshare presentation, so we grab our full price tix and we're on our way.
We get to DQ about 25 minutes before it's supposed to open, and of course it's raining. So I stand in line with my flimsy $5
WalMart mini-umbrella that my wife and I bought on our way into NYC to see a U2 concert last Fall on a pouring Saturday night. We figured on that night that if they wouldn't let us into Madison Square Garden with umbrellas, we wouldn't be too upset if we had to ditch them. Same thing with DQ, particularly since they've been used a few times.
So I'm standing out in the open by the tower that shows you what the roller-coaster simulator looks like, and it's really raining and blowing pretty hard. DW, DD and DS are hanging out under the overhang at the House of Blues, and they keep waving to me like, "Hey Dad!!!! It's nice and dry over here!!!" I didn't really get too wet, but it wasn't a pleasant morning to say the least.
They let us into DQ a few minutes early - perhaps they just wanted to get us out of the rain, or maybe they always open those first doors a few minutes early. Regardless, we're in through the turnstiles and on our elevator before the posted opening time. We go up the elevator with our map in hand and we devise our gameplan. First things first - where's the Pirates of the Caribbean Game?!? Bottom Floor!!! Let's go!!!!!!!! This is the first of many times that I felt like Lt. Winters from
Band of Brothers. "Follow Me!!"
I'm a pretty big guy (6'3" - 240 lbs.), so it's my job (at least in my mind) to figure out where we're going and blaze a path through all of those smaller, less-determined vacationers in our way.
So we find the staircase that leads downstairs and we go down to the bottom floor and run over to POC. Nobody in line until we get all the way up front. Nice. Within minutes we're being handed our glasses and we're being led to our ship. That's a really cool game. I was the captain, so I was in charge of driving the boat and yelling out to everyone where the other ships were so that they could run back and forth, firing their cannons like madmen. We really liked this a lot, and said that we'd return to it later.
Overall Grade for Pirates of the Caribbean - Battle for Buccaneer Gold: A
Next we scurry over to the Virtual Jungle Cruise. Not much of a line either, so we run on within a matter of minutes and climb into our raft. We pick up our oars and our adventure begins. I have to say that this wasn't as good as I expected. Maybe it was the kids, maybe it's just the game - but it didn't seem like we could control what we doing very well. I was rowing and rowing like a maniac, and it seemed like we were just going wherever the current was taking us. Nothing special here. I'd only do it again if I could just walk right on - I'd never wait in line for it, for sure.
Overall Grade for Virtual Jungle Cruise: C
So after this is over we run upstairs one level and get in the line for Aladdin's Magic Carpet Ride. The crowds are definitely starting to fill DQ up by this time, as we wait about 20 minutes to get on this game. We have our first experience with those snap on virtual reality helmets and have a good time riding our carpets around, collecting jewels and scarab beetles, etc..... Good game, not great. Fun enough. I got a laugh when I turned my head to the side before the game actually started and saw that all of my family members were monkeys. DD, who loves monkeys, thought this was cool too.
Overall Grade for Aladdin's Magic Carpet Ride: B+
After Aladdin we walk to the other side of the 2nd floor and get in line for CyberSpace Mountain. I thought that this was pretty cool and actually worth the wait - which was probably close to 40 minutes. DS went with me, DD and DW went together. DS wanted to put everything we could into our virtual coaster, so we ended up with 7 inversions!! We pretty much just kept on pushing any element that said, "Extreme!!" When all was said and done, our computer gave us the highest intensity score possible - I think it was a 5. DD and DW's coaster was a 2!! Wimps.

So we get in that 2nd line, we chat with some British people while we're waiting, and soon enough we're getting into our capsule. It was pretty wild, lots of flipping and twisting - I have to say I was getting a little queasy by the time it ended, but it was still a good ride. DD thought it was a little scary, but she liked her baby coaster good enough, I guess.
Overall Grade for CyberSpace Mountain: B+
By this time we need a bathroom break, so we skip over the 3rd floor (how does a place like this not have a bathroom on every floor?!?) and run up to the 4th floor. DS and I shoot a few hoops in the Sports Arena Arcade while we're waiting for the girls, and we decide that we need a drink. So I go over to the counter at the Wonderland Cafe and get a large root beer (DD's favorite) and a piece of PeanutButter Cup Cheesecake. We grab a seat at the counter and dig in. That cake was awesome - I highly recommend it.
We wolf it down pretty quick and decide that we should go back downstairs and head over to Buzz Lightyear's Astroblaster. There's a pretty good line here as well, probably 30+ minutes, but the wait goes pretty quick with all of those 80s video games around. DW holds our place in line while me and the kids play some coin-op games from days gone by. I really got a kick out of this, especially telling the kids about the many wasted hours and quarters I went through playing Dig-Dug, Mr. Do!!, Galaga, Donkey Kong and PacMan at the laundromat and roller skating rink when I was a kid. So we get on the AstroBlaster - DD goes with me, DW and DS are together. DD and I take a cart that is kinda' by itself, and I immediately run away from everyone else and pick up as many balls as possible. This helped a lot, as we were never wanting for ammo during the game. We circle around, shooting at a few nondescript vacationers, and then we see DW and DS.
BULLSEYE!!!
Their cart goes flying around in circles with lights flashing and DD and I celebrate and laugh our butts off. We get ours a couple of times too, but what's most important is that DW and DS never get us!! We all liked this game quite a bit, and if the line wasn't so long we would've probably done it again.
Overall Grade for Buzz Lightyear's AstroBlaster: A-
After this, we all race each other in a game of Daytona USA, which is always a good time.
Next we hit the Mighty Ducks Pinball Slam, which surprisingly has no line. We get on in 5 minutes, and we thought it was just OK. Not terribly easy to control where you're going, but still better than that Jungle Cruise game. Probably wouldn't do it again though.
Overall Grade for Mighty Ducks Pinball Slam: C+
After this we play some of the racing games on this floor. DS is big on StarWars, so him and DW play that pod racing game, I play some Fast and the Furious game, DS and I play some snowmobile racing game, and we head up to the 5th floor.
Next is Ride the Comix. We wait a good 25 minutes for this one, which brings us to our second experience with those virtual reality helmets. This ride has you swinging a light saber to fight some evil villains. It was fun. Not great, but still fun.
Overall Grade for Ride the Comix: B
From there we go straight to Invasion! An ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter. Not much of a line, and within 10 minutes we're sitting in our capsule. DD and DS take turns saying that they want to be captain and then backing out, so ultimately I get to be the captain, stopping to pick up the good guys while the rest of the family blasts aliens into submission. Cool game - not as good as Pirates, but still good.
Overall Grade for Invasion! An ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter: B+
After this we try to figure out if we've done everything. We stop by some more of the classic 80s video games and the kids come to the conclusion that they're getting hungry. The line at the FoodQuest is ridiculously long though, so we decide not to wait 30 minutes for some cafeteria food and we trudge on through the arcade. We play some more games as we're wandering downstairs, and we tell the kids that we're going to leave in a little while and we'll have a nice big dinner. We play Joust!, Missile Command, Pitfall, Ms. PacMan, some more Donkey Kong, etc...
We go downstairs and gawk at some freakish kids playing DanceDance Revolution. I say freakish not because they were odd in appearance, but freakish because I never knew that human legs were so pliable or quick-moving. I guess some kids still waste a lot of quarters, huh?

We're getting ready to head downstairs and what do DS and DD see?!? Their favorite - AirHockey. So we wait about 10 minutes for a table to open up and the kids face off in a game. This gives DW and a chance to give the map of DQ one last going over to make sure we didn't miss anything great. We decide that we've done more or less everything worthwhile, so we'll head downstairs and do Pirates one last time and call it a day. This time around there's a good 25 minute wait for Pirates. While we're standing in line, I found some Hidden Mickeys in the trees above the Pirates entrance made of 3 coconuts and had a good time pointing them out to the kids. This got the kids into the hidden Mickey spirit, and they spent a lot of time pointing out anything even remotely resembling a Mickey head to me. It's cool when you find a Hidden Mickey that you've read about, but this was one I found on my own, which felt even cooler. This time DW took the wheel on Pirates, so I was free to run around blasting cannons like crazy. I think we were better off when I was the captain, not because I drove any better, but because I have a
much louder mouth and was able to bark out orders more effectively. So we get off of the game and call it a day. All in all, I'd say that DQ was a pretty good time. A lot better than spending the day soaked with yellow garbage bags over our heads...
When we walk out of the ever-present Disney Gift Shop en route to the exit, we're taken aback by what we see. "What is that strange, glowing orb suspended high in the sky?!?" Someone from AZ informs us that it is, in fact, the sun. We rejoice!!!
So we get to the SUV and we decide that we're going to go to Carrabba's for dinner. We've never been there, but we've heard good things. We had looked it up earlier before we left for the day, and we knew that it was on Vineland. So we leave the Downtown Disney area, we turn right on 535, we go through one traffic light and what do we see a sign for?!? Vineland. Wow!! That was easy. So we turn left on Vineland, we see BahamaBreeze, we see a steakhouse, we go a ways and we see the outlet mall, we see McDonald's, we see some other restaurants, but no Carrabba's. We actually come to the end of Vineland at International Drive, one block away from our resort. So we figure that we must have missed it, so we drive around the outlet parking lot, thinking that maybe it's tucked in there. Nope. We go back towards where we came from, past Dixie Stampede and all the way back to 535 again. Still no Carrabba's!! What gives?!? So we hang a left onto 535 and go to a gas station down past Chick-Fil-A. I run inside, get some bottled water for the condo and ask the guy behind the register, who is surprisingly of Middle-Eastern descent, if he knows where Carrabba's is. He gives us directions to the only one that he knows, about 10 minutes away up by Universal on Kirkman. OK. We get on 4 and hustle up there, and it's exactly where he said it would be. On the corner of Kirkman and - what's that sign say?!? Oh, you have to be kidding me!! That sign says Vineland!! We drove from one end of Vineland to the other. You couldn't go any farther. But we were on the wrong Vineland?!? Sheesh. I'm no Vasco DeGama, but that seems a bit confusing and unfair.
So we go into Carrabba's and we immediately get a table. The kids are starving, so we put in our entire order including the Antipasti Platter, which isn't antipasta, but a collection of appetizers including fried mozzerella and calimari. It was decent. The beer was cold, the wine was good, the bread was delicious. DS realized that he's a big fan of bread dipped into olive oil and Italian spices - couldn't get enough of it. The kids both had spaghetti and meatballs, I had chicken parm which was good, DW had Pasta Carrabba which was also good. So the food was all pretty good. The service, on the other hand, not so much. The waiter forgot our appetizer, when he asked if we wanted more to drink we asked about the appetizer and it was apparent that he had forgotten it. He asked if we still wanted it, I said that we did so long as it wasn't piled on top of our food. He assured me it wouldn't be and hustled off to get it. It arrived, but then our food arrived less than 5 minutes later. That really annoys me. Strike 1. Then he informs us after my wife orders an Italian Sangria and starts drinking it that it was happy hour and we should have had 2 for 1 drinks. So my wife ends up doubled up on the wine, I'm doubled up on the beer, it's just too chaotic for my taste. A good deal, but too much confusion and too little attention to my needs. To make it up to us he comps us dessert, and we enjoy the connolis. Total bill was $71 - I think I tipped the guy $14 in spite of his crappy service, and we were on our way back to Vistana.
I decide to take the scenic route down International Drive, DS goes nuts over Skull Knigdom again, again we tell him probably not and we head back to the resort for a quick dip in the pool and an early night.
Of course, there's yet another message from the Time Share sharks which I again delete and ignore. I'm pleasantly surprised that the Mets game against the Phillies is still going on (rain delay), so I sit on the couch with a beer in hand and enjoy the evening. Tomorrow we're finally going to a theme park!!!
Next, Day 4 - Speedin', Soarin' and Sore Feet.
