Percocet and hiccups???

Has anyone taken Percocet and gotten non stop hiccups?? My DH hasn't stopped in over 24 hours!

No, I've never had that problem. I don't think it's related to the Percocet.

My sister got a really bad case of hiccups (not related to Percoset) that had to be treated with Valium. Evidently the Valium addresses the mucle spasms that cause hiccups.

I don't know if you remember, but the Today show profiled a girl a few months back who had an ongoing case of hiccups for quite a long time.

I suppose theoretically the percocet could cause central nervous system depression, which would cause muscles to be a bit more "floppy" than usual, which could result in the hiccups b/c it would effect the muscle responsible for opening/closing the airway. Or something like that ... who knows?

Whenever I take painkillers like Percocet and drink soda I get a short attack of hiccups but it goes away very quickly. I never get the hiccups otherwise. DH read somewhere that some muscle relaxants and painkillers relax the diaphram muscle in the chest and make people more prone to hiccups. I did a quick Google search and found several lists of drugs that can cause this. Several sites also advised calling a doctor if the hiccups last 24 hours or more.

I always get the hiccups when I'm on strong pain killers. It gets very old, very fast. Tell your hubby to hang in there!

I started taking Pecocet a couple of weeks ago, and now all of a sudden I can't get rid of these hiccups... I am glad to see that I'm not the only one who has experienced this problem.

I will let my doctor know about it.

Percocet makes my face itch! I have multiple foot surgeries in the last year; Percocet is the only pain killer that works for me. But sometimes they while itching drives me crazy. The nurse in the hospital said that itching is a common side effect for narcotic pain killers?

Yes, that's true. All opiates are going to make you itchy (percocet, vicodin, codeine, oxycontin, morphine, etc). It's a necessary evil if you want to not be in pain.
