Pepper Spraying Students at UC-Davis

What this thread does illustrate is why the US has the highest number of lawyers per capita of any country in the world.

Why??? Because some people understand that we have rights, and just because someone has a police badge, it doesn't mean those rights all the sudden disappear???

See? That's what's great about America. Some prefer to hire sheep to do everything exactly the same way, and never question anything. And some prefer to hire thinkers, who are going to look at a situation from all angles, and come up with ways to get the job done, no matter the obstacles in front of them.
Don't worry about the students willing to put themselves out there for what they believe in. Even though you would never hire them, there are plenty of bosses who are willing to look at the whole picture of what a person is able to bring to the table.

So you automatically qualify protesters as free thinkers and all others are sheep? My guess is that most protesters cannot clearly state the reasoning behind their protest. I imagine they do it because others are. I would conclude that many, if not most, of these protesters are sheep.

No, I don't automatically qualify protesters as free thinkers and all others as sheep. Im sure both sides of the protesting coin has many of both. However, I qualify someone who would never hire a student who had previously protested as looking to hire sheep. (the poster whom i had quoted) Personally, when hiring, I prefer to look at the whole person. Over the years I've hired plenty of free thinkers AND plenty of sheep; but I've only promoted the free thinkers and those willing to step outside the box. But that's me, and what works well in my business. The previous poster can pick what works for her/his business.

There have been tremendous things accomplished in the U.S., due to civil disobedience. Some examples:

1) The Boston Tea Party -- This was one of the many acts of civil disobedience leading to the War for Independence, establishing the United States of America as a sovereign state.

2) Abolition of slavery -- Harriet Tubman's underground railway, giving sanctuary to escaped slaves, etc. These were acts of civil disobedience. Anyone who participated in such activities was breaking the law and subject to arrest.

3) The Women's Suffrage Movement -- 1848 to 1920, thousands of women marched in the streets and submitted to arrest and jail in order to gain the right to vote.

4) The Civil Rights Movement -- included sit-ins and illegal marches which weakened segregation in the south.

It's important to remember that people who engage in civil disobedience are often heaped upon with scorn by those who don't want change. And there are consequences in their lives -- arrest, detention, fines. (Even here there are people who say they wouldn't hire the protestors, so there's an economic toll.) It's only in hindsight that such leaders are recognized as courageous.

I never ever would hire a student that was protesting. That kind of people only cause trouble.
Sorry but whit this kind of actions there only are throwing in their own windows and remember internet has a looooooooooooooooooong lasting memory.

:confused3

Is there a box on the application that you check if you were a protestor in your youth.

And my dear Liandro, I am a civil rights baby. I am the reason that discrimination on a job application is absolutely illegal. MY mother was the one of the ones who got firehosed down the street so everyone could have equal access to jobs. So I think you should get down on your knees and thank my fellow protestors because had it not been for us, this country would be a sad place indeed.

Would it depend on what was being protested?

Ok everyone is entitled to an opinion and while you don't have to agree you do have to allow them to be expressed. Some of the preceding comments are getting a bit nasty.
