Have you had your chimney checked lately?
We had a fire one street over last night. Not much outside damage but very smoky, so I imagine the inside of the house is a wreck. It was a chimney fire. I had noticed on a walk last week that they had a big load of fresh firewood delivered. Thank God they were all safe--they have kids 2,7,9. The whole neighborhood was looking out the windows, it seems. They brought in a ladder truck to go up (way way up!) and then come down and look into the chimney.
These houses in our subdivision are 15 years old, max; ours is 12. So it's not an old house. But DH tells me the chimney should be checked regularly with woodburners--he said even we should get ours looked at once in a while, even though we have a gas fireplace.
So be careful, and have that evacuation plan in place just in case. And get the chimney inspected!
