I mean this in regards to people you actually know - not just strangers posting here in the DIS or elsewhere. I have a few adult friends that I know are intelligent people, who can spell well at work, use correct grammar, etc. However, they constantly use text-speak on Facebook, and in the back of my mind I can't help but wonder. . ."What the heck?"

Not only less intelligent but immature. I find it very hard to take someone seriously if they use text speak on a message board, in emails, or even on Facebook.

I don't even type that way when I am texting, and it does annoy me when others do it. But, I don't think it reflects on their intelligence. I do think it makes them seem like they're trying way too hard to be young again :rotfl:

Dang :headache:. I messed up the poll. I forgot to include the option of "I think it makes them seem more intelligent." I KNOW someone would have chosen that, and I would have loved to see them defend their position .

Hey, you got "other!" They can just use that one! (And I'm sure someone will :rotfl:)

My money is on Monkeyboy for that choice!:thumbsup2

Ugh yes! It drives me CRAZY!

It doesn't take that much longer to type the word out, just do it!

Actually, most likely neither. Don't mistake participating in community memes with lack of intelligence or immaturity - quite the opposite generally. And, indeed, ignoring community memes could legitimately be considered excessive arrogance. Indeed, I'd be more likely to interpret as unintelligent and/or immature the practice of imposing one's own personal preferences on others, or on a community that the person making such a judgment is not the owner of.

idk y this bothers u

Meh... depends on my mood whether or not I'll type something out or not. I especially don't understand why it would bother people on Facebook. 90% of my Facebook posts are done via my phone. If I can use texting shorthand while texting, why can't I use it when doing something else with the phone?

I don't have the energy to care about this stuff. And it is driving me crazy trying to figure out the logical difference between choice #2 and choice #3. LOL.

I chose "other". I have no idea how it makes the writer sound. I read English, muy pequito Espagnol, a little French (so little, I can't even express myself), and I can follow along in Hebrew if someone else is reading it aloud. What I don't read is text message shorthand.

I changed my mind. Text-speak makes the writer appear lazy.

I don't even use text speak when I am actually texting. I use full sentences and proper punctuation. I guess it's the grammar Nazi in me. :rotfl:

Even as I'm fairly young (26), it drives me completely batty. I usually make fun of men that attempt to chat me up while using it. I equate it to as if they were talking to me like you would a baby or a puppy.
