You said the magic word "I'm guessing"! I could answer all of this if I knew a few things
What did McQueary say to Joe
What did Joe say to the administration
What did the Administration say back to Joe

If we knew that it would all be really clear but we don't.
Hopefully after the trials we know more
Although I'm guessing, I think it's highly probable that Joe Paterno knew where Gary Schultz' office was on the campus, and that it was not at the police station. And although I'm guessing, I think it highly probable that Joe Paterno knew that Gary Schultz was not a police officer and did not have a background in law enforcement.

As to what one person said to another person... notice that they all said things to each other, but they didn't say anything to actual police or law enforcement. Why didn't anyone contact the police?

And how can you ignore the disturbing fact that Joe Paterno waited several days before telling anyone?

Someone should have contacted the Police, first on that list would have been Mike McQueary! Joe very well could have thought that he did. Next on the list would be Curley and Schultz

Where are you getting several days from? Everything I saw says the next day (Sunday)

Quote from Paterno GJ testimony:

Q: You recall this taking place on a Saturday morning, the conversation with Mike?
Mr. Paterno:* Yes.
Q: When did you — did you do something with that information?
Mr. Paterno: Well, I can’t be precise.
I ordinarily would have called people right away, but it was a Saturday morning and I didn’t want to interfere with their weekends.
So I don’t know whether I did it Saturday or did it early the next week.
I’m not sure when, but I did it within the week.

You say Sunday, Joe said it was that next week. What we do know for sure is that our beloved JoePa definitely did not want to interfere with anyone else's weekend over this. :sad2:

I will fly my flag at half-staff to mourn the loss of the childhoods and innocence of dozens of young men.

Actually the Sunday date is in the "finding of facts" from the Grand Jury report
Page 7

He should not have waited till Sunday!! You call RIGHT AWAY! Who cares if it's a Saturday... he just found out a boy was being molested in his locker room showers for crying out loud!

You're fighting over whether he called on Monday or Sunday. The man should have called the second he found out about it!

There are no excuses!

So someone comes to you to talk about something that happened a few days ago and now it's an emergency?
You aren't getting that silliness like There are no excuses! [/QUOTE] is the whole problem.
There are facts and blame to be laid. Plenty of it.
Nobody is saying there isn't. But by damning someone before the facts are in we are not helping the situation or the victims. They spoke through their attorney:
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...tims-attorney-finds-fault-with-paterno-firing

The board of trustees got it wrong. They should have consulted the victims before making a decision on Mr. Paterno. They should have considered these victims watch TV and are aware of the students' reaction and may not want to be associated with the downfall of Mr. Paterno. The school instead elected to do what it felt was in its own best interest at the time. Isn’t that what put the school in this position in the first place?

The way the Board reached its decision raises more concerns than the decision itself. There is no indication the Board considered the impact of the decision on the abuse victims...They see the students reaction to the termination, and to think this does not weigh on their minds would be naive.

I suppose in the black and white world of the people attacking Joe, how the victims feel doesn't matter either.

When someone comes to me and says he saw a boy being molested by a man in the showers of my locker room? For a normal human being, yes! lol

Am I living on a different planet or something?

The guy worked for him for like 20 years. Mike McQueary did not tell him the graphic detail that later came out, that much is clear. He thought about it then called. Once again it's all so clear in hindsight.
At the time I'm sure it was a huge step.

But not a cop or a person with police powers.

Which in other words means he was an administrator that was not required to file a report when a possible crime was reported.

I'm a manager and I'm required to report issues that I become aware of.

I have a choice:

1) I report an issue to HR
or
2) I report an issue to my manager.

I know if I report an issue to HR it becomes official. It is guarrenteed to be documented and investigated.

If I report it to my manager I know it could be handled 'unofficially'

I know the difference between the 2. Paterno new the difference between the 2.

He choose the method that allowed the 'big problem', as he called it, to be handled 'unofficially'.

Unforgivable in my opinion.

Sandusky had already been accused twice before... 1998 and 2000. Do you really think Paterno, who was king of that campus, was not aware of that?

Why do you think Sandusky resigned the same year he won Assitant coach of the year?

It was covered up 3 times.

I think its a disgrace to true heroes and great men/women that lost their lives.

:thumbsup2

I personally find it disgusting that the state is honoring this person. :sad2:

I agree with you. It is a disgrace to the real heroes of our nation. what a slap in the face!

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 I agree!! It makes me sick that some people are so blinded by his "greatness" that they find excuses for what he did or actually did NOT do! The guy was a football coach-not even a pro coach--a college football coach...not a god, not some saint--he is answering now though for his actions!!

Paterno did what he did and how because he was afraid of losing his gravy boat. He was afraid of a blow up involving "his" school, "his" coaching staff,"his" football program. He was afraid of losing his job for opening his mouth and he was afraid of any other repercussions that would have come at him down the line. THAT is why he did what he did (or didn't do). Fear.

He let evil dominate for his own selfish reasons. That's my opinion. Play it how you want, try and justify it and twist however you can, it's still the bottom line.

Evil won because it found a good man's niche. His unwaivering pride. Joe wasn't about to let "his" school go down simply for a few innocent children, he wasn't gonna lose HIS job. Yeah, THAT's someone to honor, isn't it?

Actually I wonder if that made it worse. In the 1998 case it went all the way to the District attorney who said there was nothing to prosecute and dropped the charges. If Joe had known that he may very well have thought "Oh Jerry is being railroaded again"

Do you think like that? Honestly? How about, where there's smoke, there's fire. I understand you don't want to pass judgement before the facts come out and the trial is over but you seriously don't have any doubts that Joe and PSU knew after two previous investigations and his resignation in the same year he was voted Assistant Coach of the Year? Can't you see how suspicious it looks? I absolutely believe it was a cover up. I don't know if any money exchanged hands per se but I think there was a reason McQueary kept his mouth shut and got promoted up the ranks as far as he did. I hope McQueary is ruined and gets charged. He is a despicable human being.

You just have excuse after excuse for Paterno.

Where are you getting several days from? Everything I saw says the next day (Sunday)
I was getting that from Joe's testimony where he stated...
So I don’t know whether I did it Saturday or did it early the next week.
I’m not sure when, but I did it within the week.

I just checked out the report you referred me to where the grand jury determined that he contacted Tim Curley the next day. Whether he waited one, two or three days is not the point. As another poster stated, a normal human being would have done something right away.
So someone comes to you to talk about something that happened a few days ago and now it's an emergency?
If you refer back to that same page 7 that you referred me to, you'd see that McQuery contacted Paterno the next morning after he witnessed the shower incident. But how many days he waited or not, again is not the point. The police should have been contacted immediately.

The guy worked for him for like 20 years. Mike McQueary did not tell him the graphic detail that later came out, that much is clear. He thought about it then called. Once again it's all so clear in hindsight.
At the time I'm sure it was a huge step.
Once again, if you refer back to page 7 of the report that you referred me to... Paterno stated what he had been told by McQuery...
"the graduate assistant had seen Jerry Sandusky in the Lasch Building showers fondling or doing something of a sexual nature to a young boy."

That would be graphic enough for me to contact law enforcement immediately. This was not an anonymous tip or third hand information. This was information direct from an assistant of mine who had seen this with his own eyes.
He already said he had no prior knowledge of any of the past accusations... no one on campus knew about them..
When asked by the grand jury if he knew of any other inappropriate sexual conduct by Jerry Sandusky with young boys, Joe Paterno was not definitive with his answer...
I do not know of anything else that Jerry would be involved in of that nature, no. I do not know of it.
You did mention — I think you said something about a rumor. It may have been discussed in my presence, something else about somebody.
I don’t know.

I don’t remember, and I could not honestly say I heard a rumor.
