Dumb question....but does the $10 per person penalty actually happen for canceling less than 24h? I wasn't sure if that was just a possible thing to discourage no-shows, or a pretty strict policy. Thanks!!

Yup. It's automated, so.

Ah, good to know. Since I will be there during Christmas I probably don't want to chance actually getting another reservation during my trip. I'm probably going to release some reservations, but I'll make a separate post about it to give everyone the heads up.

a couple years ago, I called the reservation line 2 hours before my reservation, and was able to get it cancelled without penalty as a courtesy. The park was crazy busy, hot, we were all exhausted, and we went back to our hotel room to rest, and didn’t feel like going back to the park.

what I feel is that if you make the effort to let them know, there is a decent chance they will waive the fee as a courtesy. Don’t count on it though.

Real issue now is the dining reservation line no longer exists. And changing reservations is difficult due to lack of availability.

I tried to cancel my BB reservation on Tuesday. We were soaked to the skin and freezing from the intensity of the storm that day. I was told by the host at BB that they couldn't cancel it and I'd have to call. I decided I'd rather lose the $20 than suffer through a miserable lunch that would cost a lot more than $20.

The next day we went back and I explained the situation to the host on duty then. He said, "Well, we can just get you in now!" so we went ahead and had lunch/dinner there at a wonderful waterside table. It was never clear how or if that helped with our no-show charge, but we had a great meal and a great time. Since it was only 2 of us, it wasn't as bad is if we'd been a family or larger group.

We have also cancelled a reservation from inside the park by going to hostess stand the day of and letting them know we wouldn't be able to make it. They said no problem and didn't charge a penalty.
We've done the same and never been charged! Dining ressies are so hard to come by right now, someone is sure to snatch up your cancellation!
