About 7 years ago there was a place in the animal kingdom by the raft ride, you could pick an oyster and they would pull a pearl out of it for you. Did they move it somewhere else or did they quit doing this?

Was it cruelty to oysters?

I don't remember ever seeing this, but if it was removed I doubt if it had anything to do with cruelty to the oysters because Disney still does this.

You can pick a pearl from an oyster at the Japanese pavillion in Epcot as well as somewhere else on property (DTD I think?). I picked a 7 mm pearl in Japan this past May.

There's a "pick a pearl" (oh, I can't think of what they're called. The portable vendor "stand" type booth things they have in malls) at Blizzard Beach. Or there was this past January anyway.

There has also been a long time stand by the BC on the beach by stormalong bay. Our DD did that one as well as Japan last Dec. We go home with lots of pearls each year. :goodvibes Some day I will have enough of the right sizes and colors to make a beautiful necklacefor her.:cheer2:

Ohh I'd like to do this- anyoene know how much it is?

I did this in the Japan building in WorldShowcase last year.
They also had one near Captn Jacks Marina in DowntownDisney.
Those are the two I know of - it was not expensive - the setting is!
Enjoy!

I didn't check to see if it was there on our last visit, but about 5 years ago I got one from the one in AK, too. So, I do know that it used to be there. Actually, I was a little disappointed b/c, although the actual pearl has held up fine, the ring they sold me started flaking about a month after I got home. And it was NOT cheap! My sister also got one on the same trip, and her ring is fine...so, I don't know if I just got a bad one or what. :confused3

There is one in the Japan store in Epcot and a vendor booth in Downtown Disney (I was going to get one but DS was sick and I had to get him back to the room).

Just beware of the one in downtown disney. It is not owned by Disney, but rather an outside company, and it is not the same one as the one at the Japan pavillion. They actually did nothing but bash the one in Japan. This has been a tradition for me every trip to Disney, to get a pearl in Japan, but on our last trip we weren't going to Epcot, so I found the one in downtown disney. It ruined the whole experience for me. The whole time I was picking it out, she was doing the hard sell on settings saying that it had to be done in 6 months or the pearl would dry up, and completely bashing the sellers at the Japan pavillion. I'm sorry, but I'd take the experience at Epcot any day. At least they get all excited and don't do such a hard sell over there.

I think the Picking is just $14.99 then you can go way up from there for the jewelry additions.

I would take that back to one of the Disney locations and let them know . You never know they may replace it for you.

Picking the pearl (in November 2006) at EPCOT Japan was total of $14.80 with tax ... so it was 13.80. (Obsessive WDW receipt keeper!). Anyway ... it was so much fun and the salespeople were great. They never really pushed any settings at all. I did get a white gold setting with little diamond chips and that was total of $180. But they had many much less settings. It was my anniversary and I wanted a nice one. I don't wear it often but it has held up just fine. I really enjoyed the experience.

Mine was a 7 mm pink pearl. At 7.5 mm, they ring a gong for you. Mine was not gong worthy but was lovely all the same!

By the way ... the oysters are already dead and just preserved. I had to check on this because I could not bear to have one "killed" on my request -- so since it was already in oyster heaven, I went ahead and picked a pearl. (Nope - can't do lobsters if I have to pick it out and if I had to kill the cow ... we would all be vegetarians!! )
