Hi! We have 8 am tickets for Pearl Harbor on Saturday December 3. What time should we arrive? What time should we leave Aulani? How long does it take to drive? And any other advice/tips would be helpful.

I can't answer as far as what time you should leave from Aulani but Pearl Harbor Historical Sites recommends being there a full hour before your tour time.

We just went there in mid-September. Got there at 7:30am for an 8am tour time. They have you line up for the theater show (which happens before you actually go to the memorial) around 10mins before your tour time. So for us for an 8am time we lined up at 7:50am. At that time in the morning there was plenty of parking available.

We stayed about 12 miles north along the coast from Aulani or about 20-40 mins depending on traffic to get to Aulani. It took us just about 1 hr 30 mins to get to Pearl Harbor due to traffic from our condo but that was during the week so we were battling work traffic too. We had planned on being there an hour before our tour time as recommended but with traffic it became impossible. We left our condo a tad after 6 am. I don't know if the Historical Sites will be more busy on a Saturday vs during the week and that may affect your parking options. Without a doubt though having a tour time in the early morning is best not only for parking but if you plan on doing anything else there as well.

If you feel like you might get emotional I would recommend bringing some tissues with you.

We left at 6:10, had to get gas, and did run into traffic. After parking etc, we ended up at the gates around 7:30. Just a reminder that only small wallets, cameras and clear water bottles are allowed so plan ahead. My small crossbody was not allowed so we had to take the time to check that. The bag check is $3, cash only.

Thanks so much for the note about the clear water bottles! I had not heard that elsewhere and ours are not clear! We'll make sure to take regular bottled water that day instead of our HydroFlasks. Thanks!! Also, regarding bags, do you know if a SpiBelt for my phone and ID would be considered a "bag" if wallets are allowed? Just wondering what kinds of things you saw going in versus the wording.

I have a SpiBelt too, though I didn't wear it to Pearl Harbor. If you wore your shirt over it, you'd probably be fine. We didn't go through any kind of check for that. Bag check, though, was very easy. I went over to it while our group waited in line and it took only a minute to check my normal purse and then retrieve it when we came out.

I'm thinking more along the lines of if we need "personal" items while we're there....thanks!

Another traffic tip that I learned here and came in very handy: take the HOV lane when heading to PH if you can. It saves a bunch of time in morning traffic. You can't get off the HOV until the airport exit (this exit is one exit past PH when coming to PH from Aulani). Then you have to make a u turn and just stay on access to get back to pH. Saved at least 30 minutes on a Wednesday morning for the 9am Arizona tickets we had.

I carried a zippered cell phone case with a carry strap. Along with my phone, I threw in my ID, credit card, and some cash. Getting there early is best. Leave time for traffic. We took the bus excursion from Aulani. I believe they plan for an hour long drive (perhaps a bit more) with arrival 1/2 hour prior to time on tickets.

I carried a small wristlet. No one questioned it.

Thanks!!! Great to know.

We went on Sunday. We also had an 8:00 tour time. We left about 6:45 and had plenty of time despite making a wrong turn. The valet desk has directions printed out for almost everywhere you might want to go! We arrived about 7:30. Sunday is the least traffic. Do Not leave anything in the car! We put some small items under the cover in the rear of the car (small SUV) at Aulani before we left. So we only took our bags, camera and the scooter out.
My friend is using an ECV/scooter so we brought her HA pass. Even with unloading and setting up the scooter we were at the bag check by 7:40. The bag check fee is $3.00 per bag. If have a bag such as a backpack you can put smaller bags inside and then only pay for one bag. There are restrooms outside near the bag check as well as inside near the gate and by the snack shop.
Yes only clear water bottles are allowed. Cameras are okay but no camera bags. I did see one lady with a small clear bag that they let through. She had a wallet and some tissues in it.

Take your wallet and ID if you want to shop. They will ask for ID if you use a credit or debit card. The lady at the bag check told me this. We took a camera (DSLR), wallet with ID and credit card, cell phone, some tissues (because I tear up a lot at memorials) and some cough drops. I put everything but the camera in my pocket.
We stopped at the ticket desk and got our tickets and then picked up our audio tours. I highly recommend the audio tour! It made the entire experience so much more meaningful and informative. We listened to the first 2 stops on the tour and then headed off to the theatre. There are audio messages for as you exit the theatre and again as you ride the shuttle boat.
The audio tour is not continuous so you can listen to one stop and then go to another one. You get a map with the audio tour locations and there are markers as well. And you can listen to the stops in any order you wish.
It is narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis with remarks by Daniel Martinez, WW 2 Valor in the Pacific, Historian and includes remarks by survivors-military as well as civilian. The museum also has a brief movie about the attack. We took our time at the stops, rested, used the restrooms and got some drinks. Actually the snacks at the visitors center were priced better than almost anyplace else we have visited!

They will ask you to turn off your cell phone and use it only as a camera. The Park Ranger outside the theatre reminded us that the Navy runs the shuttle boat to the memorial and though the gentlemen on it look to be about 12 years old they are active duty Navy and this is their assigned job. They also will not take any nonsense.

And when we were nearly done we met 2 Pearl Harbor survivors. One was on the USS Pennsylvania and the other was born in Honolulu and was drafted into the Army in June, 1941 and was at Schofield Barracks during the attack. The survivors were just outside the gift shop. There is a sign that says our survivors are fragile so please don't touch them. They each had a sheet with a brief bio and were 'autographing' books etc. with a rubber stamp.
We did see several tour groups who seemed to be on a tight schedule. We felt that we needed to time to see and reflect on what we were learning. I learned a lot about the impact on the local civilians and there is a remembrance circle that includes the names of all who died military and civilian.

My advice is get there early and get the audio tour. It was the best $7.50 for a tour I have ever spent.

One more thing the Pearl Harbor 75th Anniversary Commemoration runs from December 1-10th. There is a website www.pearlharbor75thanniversary.com that lists all the events. I saw 2 band concerts listed for that Saturday at the visitors center.
So you may need more time to get there and see everything because of crowds. Lots of survivors, families and dignitaries are coming in.

Great info here.

Is there general agreement that Sunday is the easiest/best day to go with least traffic?

How long is the whole Pearl Harbor tour? I assume the USS Arizona is all part of a single tour?

Yes, the tour you have to reserve a time for will take you to the Arizona. Our tour time was at 9:15am and we had to be in line at 9:05am. They let us in the theater and they showed a movie that was maybe 20-25 minutes long. The ferry ride out to the Arizona was quick, and we had maybe 15 minutes or so at the memorial itself. We were back at the visitor center by 10:30 I believe.

We went on a Saturday and didn't find it all that busy, and did not run into any traffic. I would guess Saturday or Sunday are the best days to go, so you don't catch rush hour traffic.

I found Sunday to be busy later in the day but there is much less traffic than during the week. It took about 20-30 minutes to get there. The movie and trip to the USS Arizona is only one small part of what is available there. There are exhibits detailing what was happening before the attack both in the military as well as the civilian population. What happened during the attack both to the military and civilian populations. And what happened after. I strongly recommend getting the audio tour. You can listen to each 'station' at your own pace and in any order. The museum also helps you to understand what happened. We arrived about 7:40 for an 8:00 AM tour. We got online at 8:50 and were back from the memorial by 9:45. Then we spent some time using the audio tour and looking at the memorials and exhibits to help us understand what happene.
Again remember that this December 7 is the 75th Anniversary and there will be commemoration events from December 1-10. It will be much busier with many survivors, their families and dignitaries coming in for events.

We took our stuff in clear zip up bags (travel/makeup bags that my mum just happened to have!) and they were fine. Actually, our bus tour guide, the guard at the entrance and another staff member all congratulated us on bringing them lol! We had more stuff than we wanted to just stick in our pockets - sunglasses, actual glasses (reading for my mum, distance for me), phones, medications, tissues, money, ID and room key (we both have large wallets that we didn't think would pass), camera, etc.

We went on a Tuesday with no reservations this week. They release a good number day of walk up tickets. We showed up about 8:30 walked up and got a ticket for the 9:00 show and tour. I was anxious but it was so easy and didnt feel super crowded at all. Even leaving at 11 I saw people walking up and getting same day tickets easily.

I'm a little nervous now. We have 8am tickets for Monday morning (Dec 5). The car rental place doesn't open until 7am. I hope we make it in time, if not, I hope we can get walk up tickets.

You are cutting it close. With the weekday traffic and the 75th Anniversary that week you may have a problem. They do release some more tickets online the day before. I believe at 7AM. Are you renting from the car rental desk at Aulani? When do you arrived? Check with the desk the day you arrive to see if you can get the car any earlier or add a day to your rental. The World War II Valor in the Pacific National Park will be very busy during the 75th Anniversary December 1-10.
