Hi there-

My ds (2) was just diagnosed with allergies to peanut/tree nuts. Any places I should avoid? Also, any foods that might have it in that I would not expect?

Thanks for the help.

This topic is often talked about on the disABILITIES board. Ask over there and you will get loads of help from parents who have been there, done that.

First thing you are going to do is contact Brenda Bennett at
Brenda.Bennett@disney.com
and let her know when you are going and what allergies there are.

She will give you all the latest information about what is safe to eat, in all the parks.

My DS was 18 mos when we found out about his Peanut and Tree Nut allergy. He is now 5 yrs old and we have been to Disney many times with him.
They are Great with allergies. When you make your ADR's let them know about the allergy, they will also give you a phone number of each restaurant so you can call and arrange food.

We never called the restaurants, we just made sure they knew about the allergy and then the chef would come out and talk to us and told us what was safe for him to eat.
My DS is a French fry and hot dog, chicken nuggets and grill cheese kid. So we really never need special food made for him.

When my son was younger he ate off my plate and still does at times now. So I just would order safe food he and I can eat together. Spaghetti was the main dish I usually ordered, for us to share.

At buffets the chef will come out and walk you through the buffet and let you know what is safe. At sit downs the Chef will come out and at counter services ask for the book it has the ingredients of all the food in there.

Stay away from Wolf Gang pucks on the West Side at DTD they use a lot of peanut/peanut oils in their food.
Never eat any bread they put on your table, it is from an out door vendor and they can't be sure it is safe. The restaurants will tell you that.

My son loved the Popsicles Itzakoodize and he even at the Mickey Heads Ice Cream Bars.

The pretzels aren't safe either, made in the same plant with peanuts. I didn't know that at first and my son always ate them. Now it is hard to explain to him a made a mistake and he was lucky every time he ate them.

If you are staying at a hotel with a food court let them know and they will make safe food for you.

Just remember to let everyone know about the allergy and all will go fine. Disney is the one place everyone cares about allergies. They will help you every time.

Have Fun.
Maria

I would also call your resort about a week before checking in and tell them about the allergy, so they can make sure they wipe everything down good and change the bedspreads and all....

Hang in there, I know this is a very trying experience for you. How did you find out about his allergy? Did he have a reaction? How severe is it? Is it ingestion only, or inhalation also? I've lived 40+ years with this same allergy after being diagnosed at 18 mo. My daughter was diagnosed last year at 8 yrs. (probably that late because we don't keep any peanut products in the house).

If you are flying to DW, make sure they won't be serving peanuts as a snack.

There are many accomodations that can be made - at DW, school (when he's old enough), restaurants, and so on.

This site http://www.peanutallergy.com/ has tons of information, as well as a discussion forum.

At the buffets, be careful of cross-contamination from the serving spoons as well - I wouldn't do buffets if the allergy is a life-threatening one!

You can do this! Disney is THE best for allergy kids. You have been given lots of good advice already. But, please know that you CAN do buffets...the chef will make something safe for your child in the kitchen. My son has multiple food allergies and we do go to the buffet TS all the time, and they always make something safe for him...it's wonderful!

Also, here is a link to a fabulous support site. http://www.kidswithfoodallergies.org/

I know how overwhelming it can be at first, but take the time to educate yourself and you can manage it.

Good luck!

Thanks to everyone. I knoew I could find support from you guys. :thumbsup2 I have book marked the sites that were offered.
