If when I book I mention a peanut allergy will they do the VIP cleaning for my son?
I'm think of staying away from the AKL and park because I know the animals will probably have some kind of nuts there.
If I am booking online how would I let them know about the Nut allergies?
Also at the resort would the people at the restaurants be able to tell me what is safe for my son?

thanks so much

Check out the disABILITIES forum for more info than you can ever imagine about allergies at Disney. My son has a peanut allergy as well. There is a department at Disney for special diets, you can email them with all your ADR's and they will contact the chefs for you. All the restaurants were exceptional at accommodating us.
I had no problem at Animal Kingdom, there is no interaction with the animals and their food.
Good luck and have fun!:goodvibes

My son is only 9 months now, but we are thinking of going next year and I just don't want him toddling around in our room and finding peanuts or something from the previous guest under the bed or something.
My only thing AKL was that I know that a lot of African food has peanuts or some kind of tree nuts in it, so I assumed that most of the food there would have some in it. I am bringing his Epi Pen, but would hate to have to use it , not a really magical experience.

By all means, head straight for our disABILITIES forum. :)

You'll find lots of parents there who've dealt with the same issues, and can tell you all about how to arrange for a VIP cleaning and work with the restaurants to assure that your son will have a safe dining experience.

Even with a VIP cleaning, things can get missed. So you would still have to walk through and check if it is that serious of an allergy. This can also happen at ANY resort or hotel.

Another downside of VIP cleaning is that it essentially locks you into THAT room. If you get there and don't like where you are assigned, then there is not much that can be done. So, you are stuck.

As for restaurants, you might want to check the DISabilities forum for allergy information. There is an email that you send your information to as you get closer to your trip.

My DD is 16 and has severe peanut, treenut and seafood allergies. She can't even touch a surface that has peanut butter residue without a reaction. That said, we have stayed at WDW many times. We have been to every park and have never had a problem at the AK. We have eaten at tons of restauraunts including Boma and Narcoossees without problems. I do note her allergies on my resort reservations and ADRs. I do tend to wipe CS tables before we eat. As for our rooms, we have 5 people and do stay at the Poly or GF. The rooms are so clean, and the beds are on platforms, so they are not open underneath. Traveling with a child with allergies can be really stressful, but WDW is the best.

Two of my kids have pn/tn and shellfish allergies. DD13 is contact sensitive to peanut. We've stayed at the Beach Club several times and never had a VIP cleaning. Neither of my kids has had even a mild allergic reaction. As a PP noted, if you have a VIP cleaning, you're stuck. Problems do occur with room assignments. It happened to us on our last trip and we had to switch rooms. We're a family of 5 and got assigned a room without a daybed. The room was also too small to fit a roll away. Fortunately, they were able to find us daybed room within a few minutes. Mousekeeping does a good job with room cleaning between guests.

In the parks, you'll encounter people who may have eaten peanut products gripping their hands all over bars and on the turnstiles. I've seen lots of people eating trail mixes and pb&j sandwiches while waiting in ride lines. It's not something to get in a panic about, but just to be aware of. Again, neither of my kids has had any sort of allergic reaction in the parks. If someone directly behind or in front one of them is eating a nut product, DH and I sandwich the kids between us. AK park has never posed a problem. You won't get close enough to most of the animals to have to worry about what they might have eaten. Guests are not allowed to feed the animals. They are all on strictly controlled diets. The only area you might stay away from if you're worried is the petting area. It's mostly farm animals. We've never gone.

If you make your ADRs online, there are boxes you can check off allergies. If you call, let the CM know about the allergy, so it can be attached to your ADR. When you go to the restaurant, tell you server you'd like to speak to the chef about the allergy. He/she will come to your table and discuss safe options. At CS, let the cashier know. Usually a manager will help you order, but sometimes they'll give you an ingredient binder to double-check that what you want to order is o.k.

Disney does a great job helping guests with allergies. Do the things you do at home, like carry benadryl and epipens, ask questions before your child eats anything, when in doubt, don't eat it, and wash hands frequently. Have a great trip! :thumbsup2

We went in Nov 2010 & booked online. Then I called Disney to request the VIP cleaning because our youngest has a peanut, treenut, & shellfish allergy. We were also able to get my sister's family's room VIP cleaned as well since our kids would be going into their room. I called the Disney dining reservation number & put it on all our reservations that our daughter had these food allergies. The VIP cleaning did happen. My sister's room wasn't ready when we checked in, but ours was. She ended up next door to us & when we were going into our room we could here mousekeeping scrubbing away in that room. Also, when we went to dinner the chef always came out to speak with us to let us know the situation with the restaurant& what was safe& what wasn't. I did double check to make sure the allergy was on the reservation& each time it was and again with the waitress/waiter. We found it to be a wonderful experience. Of course, we had her Epipen& benadryl just in case.

What might be a dumb question...how in the world do you know your 9 month old has a peanut allergy? At 9 months...generally fruit, veggies, grains and of course formula or if you nursed him are the only items a baby would have eaten. And if they had something else "accidentally" before that age, how can you really be sure it is an allergy and not just a case of they were way too young for their body to react "properly" to such food? My daughter had reactions to anything oat/wheat based at around 8 mos, so of course we stopped any type of grains and went for testing to check for celiac, wheat allergy etc, but by 15 mos she was having no issues, it was just that her little body wasn't able to process grains yet.

To your original question, not sure VIP cleaning is really necessary...as others have mentioned you cannot VIP clean every place you will ever take your child (Disney or otherwise). Learning to cope with an allergy and not being dependent on others will become critical to leading a somewhat "normal" life for you and your child.

And before I get flamed, I am allergic to tree nuts and have been since my teenage years, not once have I asked for special cleaning, special seating, restrictions on what others eat, etc. I ask the proper questions, meet with Chef's when out to eat and notify servers so they are aware, but at the end of the day it is my responsibility to keep me safe.

Camlace, no one should "flame" you. My DD had her first nut reaction when she was 8 months old. We were at a party and while I went to the bathroom, someone let her have a bit of a peanut butter cookie. She was covered with hives in minutes. When she was a baby, she was allergic to tons of things. She lived on breastmilk and a few single ingredient foods. Thankfully she's better now. She has to be careful, but she is a happy, healthy teen.

Ref the bolded, it is so true. The VIP cleaning we had last October has me fearful to ever stay on property again. You really have to be vigilant and check.

I can tell you that our experience with VIP cleaning at the Cabins was great. It did start out bad because a computer glitch did not show the request until we checked in but they quickly got a decent clean in and while it was not complete that night, they came back and worked until it was perfect and my youngest never had a problem there. The Mousekeeping manager came to our cabin to talk with us and they had even replaced the cofee maker with a brand new one to avoid any possibly contamination (my youngest doesn't have a food allergy but they still did it).

The mousekeeping manager at the cabins last June was Chris and he was really helpful. Her explained everything and gave me his card to contact directly in case we needed to. I can never thank him enough.

Hope maybe I can help with a few of your concerns.

In AK the info I was given was that the birds and bird handlers do eat nuts and the handlers do have nut oil residues on them.

We also discovered by asking that some of the snimals at Rafakis Planet Watch ( place you take the train to) does feed some of the animals peanut butter. ( The pigs for one. )

But other than avoiding certain places like Yak and Yeti ( uses peanut oils) you should have no issues. You can contact them for a list of resturants in the parks and resorts that have allergy friendly foods available.

One really big thing to know is that while Itsakadoozies, frozen fruit bars , and Mickey bars are considered safe ( peanut / tree nut free - does use processed coconut oil ) they are often sold in cart right next to peanut covered bannannas. Those peanuts do get loose in those carts and if you have a touch allergic child you will want to be careful from which cart you get your frozen snacks.

MK- you can find many safe frozen bannanna nut free carts. In other parks not so much. I know of only one safe one at HS/MGM and thats over by Toy Story Mania . Woodys snack cart. Ice Cream from Dinosaur Gerties ( giant dino by water) is a safe soft serve also. In Epcot I havent had much luck. AK- We found only one cart and it was at the time over in Dinoland.

Also each park and resort has a head chef. They are really great to deal with and always go above and beyond . Plus you know that they know their stuff.

I know that Chef Tj is now stationed at the Grand Floridian and is famous for being great with allergies. In the Mk the head chef works out of The Plaza and was great at making anything my child wanted.

To avoid disapointment know also that some places can do safe Mickey shaped waffles and others cant. Its because of how certain places recieve the mix. I bought a really cute Mickey waffle maker off Target for 35.00 ( Disney store had it for 60.00) and plan on using that to compensate since it was such a big deal to my kid.

If you have a severly touch allergic child consider bringing a few pairs of gloves with. We have a dog thats trained to sniff out allergens and boy did he alert at Disney. The gloves come in handy for the games at Epcot , arcades , Indy Raceway cars , etc . .

Pretzels , churros , and popcorn ( made on shared equipment) were off limits for us but they have tons of safe options.

One last thing . When you first enter the Mk on Main St in the bakery they do have some allergy safe snacks. They used to be sold in a basket by the sodas. Most resorts and parks will have something safe also.

If no one posts it I will hunt down the email for you for special diets. They will send you a form you fill out ahead of time and a list of safe and not safe foods.

To answer that question his sister who is 2 gave him part of her blueberry muffin "that may contain tree nuts" He broke out he was breaking out to a lot of things so we took him allergist and they did testing on him and came up with the peanut/tree nut allergy and gave us an epipen.

i have two boys w/peanut/tree nut allergies... one (14yo) is confirmed and has gone anaphylactic, the other (3yo) has not been tested yet but per our ped's recommendation we are treating him as though he's allergic...

we request a special VIP cleaning and have been successful with that... the only resort/restaurant he had a problem at was AKL/Boma (and that was due to a chef who was clueless and i should have followed my gut, but i believed him)...

anyway, if you have any questions re: traveling WDW w/nut allergies, feel free to pm me :)

just curious where you got your info from? specifically that which is noted below:

Hope maybe I can help with a few of your concerns.

In AK the info I was given was that the birds and bird handlers do eat nuts and the handlers do have nut oil residues on them.

i have asked this question a number of times and have always been assured it's safe, just do not touch/shake hands w/the handlers

We also discovered by asking that some of the snimals at Rafakis Planet Watch ( place you take the train to) does feed some of the animals peanut butter. ( The pigs for one. )

But other than avoiding certain places like Yak and Yeti ( uses peanut oils) you should have no issues. You can contact them for a list of resturants in the parks and resorts that have allergy friendly foods available.

we have eaten dinner at Y&Y and have had no problem... never told of peanut oil being used, however it is present in certain dishes (lettuce wraps for one) but they have an "allergy kitchen" where they prepared ds' ribs/etc...

i have been to wdw more than 3 dozen times, at least a dozen of those w/ds who is peanut/tree nut allergic and do not recall ever seeing frozen bananas w/nuts anywhere other than DTD... they are in all the parks???

Also each park and resort has a head chef. They are really great to deal with and always go above and beyond . Plus you know that they know their stuff.

I know that Chef Tj is now stationed at the Grand Floridian and is famous for being great with allergies. In the Mk the head chef works out of The Plaza and was great at making anything my child wanted.

Chef TJ is the BESTTTT!!!!! He made my son feel like royalty! And the chef at the plaza (i have pics of him and our family, along w/jeanette our fave server, but do not recall his name is also awesome and amazing... for what we thought would be a simiple meal was probably the highlight of our trip! Also, Gigi at the Wishes Dessert Party is OUTSTANDING and made it possible for us to attend w/no problems (despite all the dessert buffet being off-limits to ds)!!!!

To avoid disapointment know also that some places can do safe Mickey shaped waffles and others cant. Its because of how certain places recieve the mix. I bought a really cute Mickey waffle maker off Target for 35.00 ( Disney store had it for 60.00) and plan on using that to compensate since it was such a big deal to my kid.

we have never been warned off mickey waffles...

according to my research and our having eaten probably a million pretzels/churros/popcorns, these are all safe, and not made on shared equipment... to the OP: i would double check this info (esp the popcorn which is popped in the cart it is being sold from...

One last thing . When you first enter the Mk on Main St in the bakery they do have some allergy safe snacks. They used to be sold in a basket by the sodas. Most resorts and parks will have something safe also.

Many of the resort gift shops have the allergy free snacks (caramel corn = yummy!) and the table service restaurants and a few CS places also offer them... we always asked for an extra to-go brownie or cookie (individually wrapped) for future snacking/dessert when safe was not available and were never denied and always offered more! Another thing that the amazing chefs can/will do w/the allergy-safe brownies is make a brownie ice cream sundae/banana split... this was *always* a huge hit w/ds as he was able to enjoy a top of the line dessert with us!!! we have also had a server run out of his restaurant, purchase itzakadoozies for the whole family and present them to us on a royal platter for dessert! it was awesome and magical!

If no one posts it I will hunt down the email for you for special diets. They will send you a form you fill out ahead of time and a list of safe and not safe foods.

I wonder if we had a different chef at Boma. We were there last week and it was the best meal (breakfast) we ever had. The chef was an older, grey haired man and he was very knowledgeble. They have dedicated pots and utensils and anything with nuts is seperated by the butter, cream cheese table. He offered to make anything my DD wanted fresh if we had concerns. I can't wait to go back for dinner.

we ate there twice... first time at night, very helpful, knowledgable, offered to make my son whatever he wanted (safely), etc... excellent experience...

next morning for b'fast... not so much... chef told him a specific item was safe and because it was a baked good, i doubted it... i asked three times at least always being assured it was fine, no possible x-contam, etc... and each time we were assured... so my son hit the platter w/vigor (not having had a real baked good all.week.long.) and reacted w/in minutes... it was horrible... and it was our last full day of vacay... this was a few years ago, and we have had successful trips many times since, but i can't get past it in my head and will likely never take my kids to boma again...

What a nightmare. The chef specifically told my DD that the baked goods were not safe because they come from an outside bakery. He did tell her that the banana bread was made onsite but was near the other baked goods and that cross-contamination could be a problem. She is so good about staying safe,(as we know one reaction is one too many), that she avoided it anyway. I'm so sorry your son had a reaction. I know how lucky we've been.

In a updated email I just recently recieved about a week ago they are still saying churros , popcorn , and pretzels are made on shared equipment. You might not be as sensitive or maybe the lines were cleaned well but I would be careful in the future just in case. Below is the email I recieved.

Thank you for inquiring about how the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort handles special dietary requests.

The attached documents should help you with your planning. Please check the Walt Disney World Resorts Dietary Reference Sheet and it will give you more information regarding the products we carry.

We would be happy to notify the appropriate restaurant Chefs and Managers of your upcoming visit. It is necessary to complete the form in its entirety for us to best assist you. Should you need to make dining reservations, please call 407-WDW-DINE.

At our restaurants that offer buffets, please request to speak with a chef upon arrival. They will be happy to walk you around the buffet and show you items that will be safe. After deciding your options, the meal will be prepared separately in the kitchen in a safe place to avoid cross contact.

The chefs and managers, at our Quick Service and Resort locations, are happy to discuss and attempt to accommodate all dietary requests as well.

Please complete and return the "Guest Allergy - Dietary Request Form " by email to [specialdiets@disneyworld.com] or fax to 407-560-2992. Be sure to list the restaurant names, reservation number(s) and dates where you plan to dine. This way we can alert all the various restaurant Chefs and Managers of your upcoming visit and there would be no need for you to contact the individual restaurants directly.

Due to the large volume of meals we serve, vendors and suppliers occasionally swap out product. Therefore menu items and preparation is often updated. We stress that you ask to speak to a Chef or Manager when you arrive at each location. They will be happy to assist with your selection and provide product labels and ingredients for menu items.

Please be aware that at Disney's Animal Kingdom, our Animal Programs keepers roam the Park throughout the day and at any given time could have nuts in their pocket to use for demonstration and educational purposes while handling birds. Birds are located in just about every area of the Park. Be mindful that these keepers would have nut oil on their hands and remnants in their clothing.

Let us know if you need any further assistance.

thanks cinderella73... that's an awesome comprehensive list... i have emailed special diets before, received the chart to fill in, and some info but nothing as comprehensive as what you've shared... i wonder if this is just "new" (as in since our last visit in january)

i did, however, get an amazing comprehensive list from the concierge at the boardwalk for our next visit in november...
