Peanut Allergies a new problem?

I don't remember ANY kids having peanut allergies when I was growing up and in elementary school (late 70's-1980's).

Is this a new issue, or a growing one?

I knew no one growing up with any food allergies. My 2 year old is allergic to peanuts/tree nuts and eggs. We have no food allergies in our family but according to the allergist, if people in your family have allergies (DH family has season/environmental) your kids can end up with food allergies. It sucks but I am thankful he isn't allergic to the harder to avoid stuff like milk or wheat! There is an alarming rise on food allergies in children.

I didn't know anyone with allergies to anything when I was growing up either. Strange, I was just thinking about that the other day. Not sure why the rise in it.

i didn't know anyone either. peanut butter was a staple of our diet growing up-if we hadn't eaten PB&J, we'd have probably starved, lol.
i found out when i was 18 years old that i was allergic to milk products. i find this odd, since i ate things made with milk all my life (never cared to drink milk, though). i have no other food allergies, thank goodness.

Somewhere I read they are processing peanuts differently than before. And some country where they process them differently from us has a lower rate of peanut allergies.

My DH, born in the early 1950s, has a peanut and tree nut allergy. From what he tells me, he was about 3 years old when his parents found out he had the allergy. DH was very lucky, his allergic reaction occurred in front of his DF, who was a veterinarian and recognized DH's symptoms, and football-carried DH to the hospital, 3 blocks away.

I was in elementary school in the 90's and none of my friends had peanut allergies and I never heard of anyone else in my school have them. When I was about 11, my uncle and his family moved close to us. My uncle was in the military so they had been moving around a lot and I didn't know my cousins that well. Soon after they moved near us, we had a welcome home party and somebody brought peanut butter cookies and my aunt said that my cousin who was 8 or 9 at the time was allergic to peanut butter.

A former co-worker of mine who is her in 40's was also allergic to peanut butter and her allergy was so bad she couldn't take the smell in so everyone was advised to keep peanut butter out of the lounge area and fridge.

I was elementary school from 1962 on, never heard of peanut allergies. Bee sting allergies, yes, food allergies, no.

I never knew anyone growing up with peanut allergies. I remember someone with shellfish allergies and I knew people with seasonal allergies, but that's it.
