I'm still researching dvc and keep reading about "peak dvc times". When is that? I've been trying to find a calendar about it and I'm not having any luck.
Is a regular Disney peak travel time different than this dvc peak?

Yes. Timeshares work by selling all available times (or nearly all, some is kept for maintenance). If there are rooms available last minute, its because someone isn't using their points. That's true with some timeshares, but DVCers tend to use their points and there is an active and easy to use rental market for when you aren't going to.
So the question isn't "what are busy times" but "how fast do rooms book up when" - they book up quickly in the last quarter of the year, especially the smaller and near park resorts - and fairly slowly in late August. Aulani has its own more and less popular times, but it will also fill to capacity.
