My son has been considering the Peace Corps. He is in college studying Physics. He would be looking to go between college and grad school. They are indicating that he could teach or many other science based things. He has done volunteer work in the states so this isn't a surprise.

It is 27 months committment. I only know 2 people who have done this and neither are around to get info. Anyone have any experience with the Peace Corp?

I have known several people who have been in the Peace Corps. They have all said it was an amazing experience and they have all been brought back home early because of dangerous conditions in the countries they were assigned. Living conditions were very primitive. health issues were a concern as well (dirty water, etc.). Again, amazing experience but very, very difficult.

I will say that if you are in the Peace Corps-- if you fill out an application for federal employment, it does ask if you were in the Peace Corps. It could be considered "federal employment" while looking for a full time government job.

There are many days when I wish I could go away for 2+ years!

I considered it at one point and thought it would be an amzing experience. Unfortunately that was around the time my dad starting getting really sick so I let the idea go. I never went back to it.

I love the concept though and while it can be dangerous I think it would realy make an impact both on the people he is helping and how he views the world.

I am grateful that he is interested in this but not so thrilled that people are confirming it is dangerous....
