We leave for disney in 3 days and my husband was just diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism. We are driving to disney from pgh , so we will be in the car along time. My mom is making me panic telling me this pe clot could kill DH and we shouldn't go on our trip. DH said not to cancel. I don't know what the doctor recommends. DH has a ct scan tomorrow. I guess we will wait to see what it says. But right now I am a mess.
Has anyone ever been diagnosed w/ a pe clot?

its going to be up to the doctor but im guessing they wouldnt think it quite safe to travel that far. they are usually treated with blood thinners and he may need his blood levels drawn and checked multiple times.

PE's when caught early are treatable but yes, your mom is correct, they can and do kill people.

I really do not think I would go on the trip. If your DH is anything like my DH, he likes to downplay medical things and not "worry" about them. It would be better safe than sorry. I would postpone the trip for a few weeks/months until the meds can do their jobs.

Postpone or cancel your trip. That's a serious condition, and the doctor is not going to want your husband heading out of town when he should be starting treatment.

Hugs. I'm sure you're very worried.

You should speak with the doctor. This can be very serious and while I'm sure your DH feels terrible to cancel you should take the doctor's recommendation, whatever it is.

I agree with previous posters. Definately not a good idea to travel while this is a new diagnosis. The problem is that if it is not treated soon and agressively it could prove fatal.
Most patients are even put in the hospital for a few days and given heparin IV until the coumadin level (it is a pill) is at a theraputic level. Disney will always be there and if you have trip insurance, that is the purpose of it!! Good luck, I am sure your husband will do well!!

I would STRONGLY suggest that you post-pone your trip. Although your DH probably "feels fine", a blood clot (PE) is very dangerous and very serious. And sitting in a car for a long time - is particularly dangerous. I don't mean to be particularly dooms-day about it but, NBC News anchor David Bloom died of a PE while riding in a military vehicle during the early days of the Iraqi war. It is very serious - and riding in a car in the same position for a long period of time is not good.

FYI - http://www.clotcare.com/clotcare/dvtstorymelaniebloom.aspx

Think of it this way - wouldn't it be better to visit at a time when you could really enjoy every minute of your trip???? And not having a nagging feeling at the back of your mind about dh's health? I'd post pone WDW - maybe just do a mini-trip (weekend away, whatever) nearer your home now?????

Yes postpone. They are extremely dangerous and he will most like need to be hosptialized until they can dissolve the clot (slowly) with blood thinners. If it dislodges it can go to his heart. My sister had one last year.

This is not a minor thing.

Ditto!

I am surprised that DH is not already in the hospital being treated with IV blood thinners to dissolve the clot. But I would expect a hospital stay of 3-5 days while on the IV medication to monitor his treatment. Traveling is actually one of the largest causes of PE's, sitting for a long time (i.e. driving a road trip) can cause a clot to form so I don't believe the doctor would allow the trip since he already has a PE. Sorry sweetie! Just get it taken care of so you no longer have to worry!!!

This is disappointing on so many levels. It's good that you found out before the road trip, though. I agree with the other posters...hopefully, you can reschedule. Going at a later date will be a lot more fun for all of you without the worry. Good luck with everything. Tell your husband to take good care of himself!

Listen to your mother.

I was hospitalized on 9/11/07 with bilateral pulmonary emboli. I passed out at work and was taken by ambulance to the ER. I spent three days in intensive care, and then four more days at the hospital before the blood thinners were at a level safe for me to go home. I was on Oxygen for the first five days.

Once was released, I had to inject myself twice a day with Lovenox until the Coumadin levels were at a therapeutic level. I had to go back to the hospital every other day to have my blood clotting times tested for several weeks, then once a week for several months. Toward the end, I had to go once a month. I was only taken off the Coumadin in July.

I had NO WARNING -- just passed out -- if I'd been driving, I'd probably be dead. If there were anyone else in the car, they might be dead as well.

Cancel your trip until your husband's condition is better. Once he is "stabilized" on blood thinners, you can travel safely.

A doctor's letter will be sufficient for your travel insurance to pay benefits, and WDW was very good about canceling stuff we had prepaid (we were scheduled to go at the end of October).

Don't risk his life or yours or your kids' lives. WDW will still be there.

Sounds like your mom was trying to give you and your DH a reality check. My doctor said that if treatment isn't started soon enough, the patient has a 30% of dying.

Be grateful for the advance warning and that your husband will have the chance to get treatment before it is that critical.

As someone with DVTs, I know that getting the medication to a therapeutic level can take weeks, even months. Your DH will have weekly blood draws if on Coumadin, or he will inject Heparin to his abdomen. Coumadin needs to be closely monitored so his blood doesn't become too thin. Plus his oxygen levels may be a concern that you can't address while driving.

Unfortunately, I would cancel the trip until he is well. A long car trip and then all the walking doesn't sound in your DHs best interest right now.

Good news!!!!
DH had a ct scan today and NO blod clots were found. The doctor is going to look over the xray again and let us know tomorrow if we can leave for disney. But right now it looks like we are going. The doctor said sometimes blood test show a false positive for pe.
