I'm looking to set up a monthly payment with our new dog sitter. I can just write her a check, but I'd rather pay her with Paypal because I can use my credit card and get airline miles.

But, I'm wondering if a payment through Paypal that is for services (not buying goods) shows up on my credit card as a cash advance (which on my card would charge me an extra fee and not be worthwhile)? I will call my credit card to double check, but I wanted to see if anyone here has experience with this.

It shouldn't BUT PayPal will still take their transaction fee (3% + $0.35) if you send payment as anything OTHER than "friends and family." And, if you use your credit card to pay as "friends and family" someone (either you or the dog sitter) is going to have to pay the PayPal transaction fee (3%) - well actually 2.9%. I don't think there's the $0.35 cent fee on top of it.

Yep, this. Your payment to her will show up as a normal purchase on your credit card. But, Paypal takes a fee anytime a credit card is used for payment. I think (but I'm not positive) when you're going a friends and family payment you get to choose whether you or they get dinged with the fee, but someone will. The 2.9% fee is probably higher than whatever you're getting in credit card points.
