if you pay with paypal for something (not via ebay ) on a merchants site and its over £100 and your paypal account is linked to a CC will you be covered on your CC if the product don't arrive?

Found this on MSE, full text in the link below.
Never thought about it, just bought a computer today off Ebay, paid by Paypal, I had no idea who the seller was until I got the receipt, happens to be DSG retail ltd selling under the name Techfurb.

"When you buy through third parties. Travel agents, paypal etc
You’re usually unlikely to be covered when payments are made to a company that isn’t the one providing you with the good or service because the credit card company must have a direct relationship for them to be equally liable."

I thought you would be protected via paypal !!

When we bought an Ipod off ebay and it turned out to be a cheap import we claimed from paypal and with photo evidence it was all sorted quite quickly!!

Paypal are very quick to do chargebacks or a hold on sellers funds, I used to be an Ebay seller and its one of the reasons I stopped selling, they put a hold on £100 of mine because of a buyer in Italy complained there was no memory stick in with the 2nd hand camera, I never advertised a memory stick with it and Sony don't (didn't) provide a memory stick when new so no reason for me to give one with the camera but Paypal did a chargeback from me and took 2 months to get it back.
Thats OK while the seller is still in business and they have a Paypal account, not sure how good Paypal protection is if they can't recover the money from them. Never really looked into it, I don't like Paypal at all (as a seller mainly)

paypal with ebay is great as you have loads of protection.but outside of ebay is different
Paypal isn't exclusive to ebay its a payment device any web trader can use
That why i asked my product haven't arrived yet and the firm i got them through
Only ordered on Sunday but i can only claim from next sunday but it takes a while
Then again the stuff might come
