Has anyone used Payless Car Rental Co. in Orlando? It's not located on site at the airport. How smoothly does picking up and dropping off go? They say there is a shuttle, but I am skeptical. I got a great rate, $215.00 economy car for 10 days including all taxes and fees. I just don't know if it is worth it. I appreciate all feedback. Thanks!!!!

I used Payless twice with no problems*, everything went smoothly.

* Once fuel was shortweighted, but I have had this happen with other rental companies as well. On my request they did oblige and mark off the car's departure with 7/8 tank as opposed to being full so I could bring it back the way I got it without extra questions asked at return time.

The trip to and from the airport was painless and much quicker than we thought it would be. My problem with Payless is that the economy car turned out to be a VERY SMALL korean car. My friend and I weren't even sure our luggage would all fit much less us. When we upgraded we ended up paying just as much as if we used one of the other rental agencies.

I'd call and check to see what make and models they have available.

Here is my story with Payless. My husband booked them for our honeymoon. We arrived in Orlando at about 10:30 pm. We waited 30 minutes for a driver. The guy sped like you would not believe. We went in to get the car... the guy charged AUTOMATICALLY the 500.00 security charge. Then wanted to know why the credit card wouldn't go through. We had only a 500 limit on that card to prevent any "overcharging" when we got upset about this, they said they would credit back the credit card and drove us to the airport. Luckily we had another reservation with another company. We called them, got the car with no problem and went to the condo only to find Payless didn't refund us the money. We fought them the entire trip and then some. I do not recommend this company at all. Surprised they are still in business.

We've used them before and were very happy with all aspects of their service. The shuttle ride was very quick and there was not a line at the counter. Drop off was even quicker. We got to the airport 1 1/2 hours early just in case, and had to sit around for almost 1 1/2 hours. We got a great deal on a minivan ( only 6000 miles on it). We would happily use them again if they turn out to be the best priced company when we go on vacation next.

>>> $500. security charge...

Was this a charge or a deposit?

You said you were on your honeymoon. Were you under 25? Rental companies sometimes require an advance deposit (not a surcharge) for drivers under 25, or drivers who decline the insurance and waiver programs, or for renters who plan to pay cash, or renters who use debit/check cards.

Did they refuse to give you a car or did you, thinking this was a surprise real surcharge, cancel the reservation at the counter first? Remember, if you have a reservation including a Priceline or Hotwire reservation, they must give you the car for the agreed upon rate plus taxes that everybody pays plus deposits mentioned in the reservation or Priceline, etc. agreement, or you are entitled to your money back with no charge for driving you back to the airport.

You really do need more credit limit or more than one credit card for use while traveling, to cover things like this. In a few cases it is not a real charge but it freezes part of your credit line so a credit card with a low credit line won't work elsewhere. In a few cases the hotel or car rental agency freezes too much just becayse they made a typo.

Next time a company makes a charge they promise to refund, have the company run the credit machine to make the credit slip to hand to you before you leave.
