Paying with giftcards then making a change

Thinking about buying some giftcards and using them to pay our next Disney trip (target) and just wonder what would happen if I book at rack rates then a room discount comes out. Would they need to refund my money to make the change to the reservation, or is this an easy change where you just get the discount applied and no need to cancel and rebook?

They would be able to make a change to the reservation and issue a refund, howeven the amount would have to be applied back to the gift cards, so make sure that you save them until after the trip.

Well I mean if I book at rack rate then a discount comes out for my travel dates. I still would plan to go, just want to have the discount applied. Would they still have to cancel and rebook my reservation, just to apply a discount?

Yes, I think they do cancel and rebook. That's what we had to do when we changed from a room only military discount to a room with dining military discount. From what the CM told me I think you would have to cancel one reservation and make a new one with new discount.

Thanks. It would be best to not pay everything in full too early then as I wouldn't want to go through the hassle of having to reapply all the giftcards!

Generally, if you aren't changing from a room only to a package or vice versa when you apply the discount, you shouldn't have to cancel and rebook - it should just be applied. The military discount situation described above works a little differently.

Good to know! Yes we would most likely do room a room only that way if a discount came out we could have it applied and add tickets later

Just save your gift cards, it's really no hassle. I threw my gift cards away then made a change, it was a pain. They just sent me new gift cards and it was resolved, it just too awhile to get to the right person/department who knew what to do.

If I had saved the physical cards, it would have been a breeze!

Keep in mind that you can't just add tickets to a room only reservation to make it a package. If you book room only now and want to make it a package later, the room only would have to be cancelled/refunded and the package booked, requiring a new $200 deposit (or payment in full if this is done 45 days or less from arrival). I don't have any experience with the military discount, but if it works the same as AP room only reservations vs the AP + Dine packages, the reason the pp had to cancel their room only and rebook the military discount with dining is because the dining made it a package. Since room only and packages are different reservation systems, money paid toward one cannot be applied to the other, which is why one has to be cancelled and the other rebooked. HTH :).

Interesting! I thought when using the room only discount you could also buy tickets. Would I be able to still have a discount applied if I do my original reservation as a room + tickets or would they have to cancel that to give me the room only discount? Hope this makes sense…

You can begin booking a room discount online and add tickets to it at that point, but it would be a package reservation from the get-go in that case. If you just book the room and want to add tickets later, they have to cancel and re-book, as the systems for packages and room only reservations are separate.

You can book a package and still get a discount, but the discount would be on the room portion only :).

This :thumbsup2.

I recommend that you just pay the deposit, then hold onto the gift cards until the final payment is due. That way if you hav eto make changes it will be so much easier! Also, you can use gift cards to apply to any room charges.

If you book a room-only reservation and get a discount afterwards, they can put a credit on your room rather than refund the gift cards if that's what you so choose. (Trust me, I've been through this and practically every other scenario with my poor travel agent.)
