Paying room charges with gift cards

Going to BWV in a week. I have several Disney and Visa gift cards. I was planning on charging all meals to the room. Is there a limit as to how many gift cards that can be used to pay the room balance? Will they take Visa gift cards as well or do I need to get all Disney gift cards?

Yes on both. The Hungry Mouse will take your money in just about any form. Just stop at the resort desk and ask them to apply them to your balance.

I applied my Disney gift cards after checking in February and prior to charging to our room. Until we reached that credit amount our statement showed a credit balance. We will do it again on our next trip after we purchase discounted Disney cards at Target or where ever we can find them.

I find this interesting. I have asked several times and have not been allowed to apply gift cards until after items have been charged to the rooms.

I tried to apply the gift cards at check in to have them on file and was told that it wasn't permitted. This was at the BWV.

In 15+ trips to WDW over the past 8 years, I have ALWAYS added my gift cards to my room when I checked-in. They apply it as a credit and your purchases are deducted from it. You can add as much as you like. I've been known to add 20+ cards worth thousands at a time.

One word of caution, if you don't spend it all it will be added back on to one of the cards but you can't be quite sure which one so you have to hold on to them all. I've learned to only add on what I absolutely know I will be spending and then go down and add the others at a later time as required.

Well I have asked more than once, but turned down every time.

Is there a particular resort that always does this for you?

I took a couple thousand dollars worth of $50 gift cards to apply to our room charge at VGC in March, in an effort to have a credit balance leftover at the end of the trip that would all be combined on one gift card (so I could give our TA one card with a large amount to apply to our cruise). I had called VGC ahead of time and spoke to someone that said I could preapply the gift cards. However once there I tried at least 3 different front desk CMs and none of them would put cards on our room beyond a $0 balance.

I thought I was SOL, but ended up buying about $500 at WOD during our last day, applied the gift cards to a$0 balance, then ended up returning about $400 of the purchase. That left our room with a credit at checkout, which they ended up refunding to the CC we put on file at check in.

So in effect we were able to overuse the gift cards, just in a roundabout way.

This is one of those things where it depends on the knowledge of the castmember. some know how to do it, some look at you like you have worms crawling from your ears.
We have just found it easier to set the account on our credit card and every couple of days go down to the lobby to get a account statement and pay down the balance with the gift cards. The advantage is we keep pretty tight track of what we are spending, and we even found an error once.
It takes at most 5 minutes to do.

Poly, AKV, AKL, VWL, Pop, POFQ, OKW, SSR, BLT

I can be done at any of the resorts. If the CM doesn't know how to do then ask for them to get their supervisor. It is not a resort specific ability. I'm not doubting that some have had misinformed CMs but it can be done at ALL the resorts.
