Can anyone fill me in on paying cash for a night? Can they later be transferred into points if we do an add on and have more point? What is the cancellation policy for the cash nights? Do we get a DVC discount? Are weekends more $$ for cash like with points costing more in points?

Lots of questions here -- thanks for any help!

I'm not an expert at this, but can share my experience. Last year I wanted to add a studio at BWV for 1 night cash. As I recall, it was in the $230 + tax range. I ended up going to a moderate (POFQ) and, with the AP discount, got it for something like $110.

If you do a cash reservation and IF you are within the cancelation window (probably 1 day), you could cancel that and get a room with points ONLY IF a room with points is available. Cash rooms are in a different inventory than point rooms. There are a number of rooms at each DVC resort which Disney still owns and haven't been sold into the timeshare or for other reasons are cash.

I was told that MS cash reservations are like the reservations made through Disney's Central reservations office and require a 5-day notice for cancellations.

MS cash reservations depend on if they have these rooms in their inventory and are priced at 25% off the rack rate. These can be "linked" with a reservation made with points (to keep from moving) if the reservations are in the same name and exact same type of accomodation. With linked reservations, there is no need to check out and then check in again.

The CRO reservations are made either at rack rate or discounted with various codes. If these are also made in the same name and same type of accomodation, you can "cross-reference" the two reservations and request that you not be moved and the front desk will try to keep you in the same room, but there is no guarantee. You would need to check out and then check back in however.

....

Not all MS cash reservations will have a 25% discount. The discount is only available occasionally and none of us have any idea when it is available and when it is not. Many times the MS cash reservation will be at rack rate.

And there are some booking categories that are not available for cash through MS or DRC. Like the BW view at BWV or the dedicated two bedroom vill at BCV with two queen beds in the second bedroom.

I just called MS this week to ask about this and the CM that I got (I know, sometimes there are different answers) was that if you book a room through MS as cash, you can only book on points later if there is still availability.

You can not really just switch a cash room to points, especially if it is booked during the home resort booking period.

So, if I book a 1 bedroom SV room at BLT on cash (say it is available for cash) because I don't have enough points, I can not call back months later, after getting a transfer, and simple change it to a points room if they are not showing availability any longer for this type of room.

That is correct.

That makes sense, otherwise people would do that to get around having to wait until the 7th month mark at a none home resort. I would never have thought about that, it is good to know!
