Pay rate for tutors

Does anyone know how much tutoring centers such as Kumon pay for tutors? I worked one summer at a local tutoring center and made $15 an hour. Wondered if these franchise places pay a comparable amount. I don't want to call and inquire about a job and ask how much they pay right out of the chute. I really feel that I need to take on some part time work, and it seems that I could pretty much set my own hours this way.

If you work for a place - you've got a middleman probably taking 1/2 or more (just guessing) of what the parents are paying. And - do you really get to set your own hours?

If you can build up your own clientele, you would be able to set your own rates. Just keep in mind - you would need to keep track of your business expenses and income, and make estimated tax payments, and pay both the employee and employer part of social security taxes.

That seems low. I know tutors for math, science, and spanish and they title high schoolers for $60 an hour. They charge even more for SAT prep sessions.

If you are very good I know tutors that make $100 an hour.

But that is advanced high school subjects - calculus, physics etc.

I don't know about Kumin, but when I worked at Princeton Review I got $25 per hour for classes and $33 per hour for private tutoring. I only did SAT, grad school/med school tutors made more. That was over 10 years ago so I'd expect maybe a little more, but not much (doesn't seem like wages have increased too much...), now.

You had to have excellent scores on the tests, plus pass through a pretty rigorous training (only about half the people got through it) to qualify to tutor there.

You make a lot more doing it on your own- but you have to pay self employment taxes, which basically cut the wage by half. And it can be a lot harder to find enough clients to work steadily.

I have no desire to work for myself. What I meant by setting my hours, at the center I worked at before, they matched clients up with available tutors according to when they could work. I teach full time and wanted to pick up some extra money.
