Pastor with Guts

This Pastor has guts!! Thought you might enjoy this interesting Prayer given in Kansas at the opening session of their Senate. It seems Prayer still upsets some people. When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the New session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard:

"Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to Those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost Our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values.

We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.
We have killed our unborn and called it choice.
We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable.
We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem.
We have abused power and called it politics.
We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition.
We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of __expression.
We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.
Search us, Oh, God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from Every sin and set us free. Amen!"

The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in pr otest. In 6 short weeks, Central Christian Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor, logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of Those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India, Africa and Korea.

Commentator Paul Harvey aired this prayer on his radio program, "The Rest Of the Story," and received a larger response to this program than any other he has ever aired. With the Lord's help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and Wholeheartedly become our desire so that we again can be called "one nation Under God."

Good for him. I'm glad to see that he knew that political correctness has gone way over the line, and isn't afraid to speak out about it.

Excellent. :thumbsup2

Now, he DOES deserve one of those "profile in courage" awards.

Those legislators showed their true stripes by walking out. :sad2:

Go Pastor! Go Pastor! :woohoo:

One nation under God. :sunny:

Honu. Plenty of us who do believe in G-d would disagree with much of this..I agree with a bit , i'm neutral about some, and disagree with quite a few..
One of the greatest Jewish values is charity, for one, and so I would never agree with taking away welfare. Reforming it more possibly...In fact Judaism determies 5 differen't levels of charity..I would never want to displace Athiests
Remember the infamous Bush SR. qoute about how athiests she be considered neither patriots or citizens?

That is a very broad statement calling welfare recipients lazy.
I'm sure Jesus would approve

Thank you for saying what I felt but would have gotten PO'd about.

AMEN!!!!!!

I live in Welfare Central and believe me although some welfare IS needed 95% of it here is NOT. Why work when you can get everything for free. Again I'm not saying its that way everywhere, but it is here. Oh and I by NO MEANS am including the elderly in the above statement. They by far are the ones the NEED and DESERVE the welfare, not the 30 somethings with 15 kids by 15 daddys just to get more money!

Don't worry Honu, I care and God cares. :sunny:

Thank you Joe. I completely support your right be believe, worship and live your life as you like. I just don't feel the same respect is often reciprocated.

I think more people should talk to welfare recipients and the people who work in welfare offices instead of being so self-righteous. Also, I wish people would understand that tax breaks (both personal and for businesses) are the same thing as welfare - government handouts. Take the log out before the speck...

I agree with you. I consider myself a Christian, but, I am very open minded about religion and politics. I also believe that religion should not be in the government. There is a reason why the Founding Fathers decided that church and state should be separate.

And as for the "One nation under God" statement, that was never meant to be in the Pledge of Allegiance.

And in mho, even though I am Christian and believe in God, it should be taken out.

This country was founded on religious Freedom. Freedom to worship (or not worship) as you pleased. Not have the Federal (or local) Government shove it down our throats.

After all, isn't that why the Pilgrims left England?

While I'm on your side, the reason the Pilgrims left Holland was because they didn't like the evil Lutheran society they found themselves in when they left England...They wanted to find a place where they could practice their religion without the influences of other religions..Massachusets Bay colony, which they founded, was a Theocracy in which their religion was the state relgion. All others could be persecuted, and they were..Quakers,like Mary Dyer were hanged on the lawn of Boston common..Other quakers were kicked out... Roger Williams was not a good enough Puratan ,so they kicked him out and he founded Rhode Island.. The same can be said about most of the other colonies ,which were usually founded by one relgion or the other, and they could persecute the other religions..Virginia was so bad and kiilled so many Catholics that Maryland was created as a Catholic State..Maryland was friendly to other religions, except for the old standbyes, witches and Jews
It was with these issues in mind that drove the founding father to make sure the US had no state religion ..They learned from the lessons of the past. Can we?

cteddiesgirl - I totally agree with this. Separation of church and state is one of the founding principals of this country. I'll take it one step further - WHT are they opening up a session of government with a prayer for? I also consider myself to be a Christian.

thank you - interesting to see that this actually happened in January 1996 - nearly 10 1/2 years ago.

"shove it down our throats..." A common Dis phrase re religion.

A pastor praying (or citing God) in a govenment building or session is fully within his rights and is not infringing on anyone else's. It's not freedom from religion. The government is not forcing it's citizens to worship or not worship God. The so-called "separation of church and state" is thrown around the Dis like sand.

These are the kinds of things that just start rumors and urban legends. I ALWAYS check out the facts from snopes.com before posting or forwarding anything like this. Even if you think it has a nice message, it loses all credibility and potential message if it's partly a lie.

As far as his prayer, which evidently did happen (a long time ago), I have to say that I found it quite un-Christlike. It was chocked full of things that are the opposite of what Jesus taught. It's a shame that a pastor further perpetuates the selfish attitude America is already full of instead of putting forth a selfless attitude like Jesus called for.

I'm sad that some identified with it...
