The DISBoards are a melting pot of people from all walks of life, leading many different professional occupations. I myself am a Hypnotherapist by trade, but who here has a previous, different job? I used to be a shooting instructor - difficult to believe, I know, given my stern opinion on firearms. But it's true! Mainly single fire, competition shooting.

I used to be a designer and illustrator for a holiday decoration company out of Philadelphia. I did that until my disability no longer permitted me to work. Before that I worked in an office filing medical records for law firms. I used to pull the paper records and attach paper subpoenas to them. This was back in the olden times. Everything that used to take me all day to accomplish probably only takes a short time on a computer now.

I was briefly a travel agent (started 3 months prior to 9-11, ended the week after), a SAHM, and leading up to now I held several different positions (receptionist, estimating, admin on the jobsite, safety manager, fixer) within the same profession (construction). Currently I am am a part time grape farmer and co-owner & Director of Risk Management of a construction company in the Mid-Atlantic region, and I'm pretty sure that's what I'll be when I retire. But never say never!

One jobs I had as a teenager in summer was working at topps bubblegum factory stuffing gum into baseball card packs on the conveyor line.
For a short time as a kid I worked for a Bang & Olufsen franchise. We also stocked the best of the best when it came to TV and HiFi components. Best job ever! Pity that it was only a Saturday job and the pay was naff. I basically sat in a big chair all day and watched movies on a cinema screen on the best speakers/AMPs etc money could buy!

My first job in the adult world was with the military for almost 8 years. I was a USAF security policeman and mainly guarded priority aircraft (B-52s and KC-135s) and nuclear weapons. I worked with law enforcement when needed (not that many females) and managed a couple of wing programs in my last few years (crime prevention and resources protection). Had a blast while it lasted! :)

I worked for a small electronics store back in the days of the introduction to 'home theater experience' and surround sound componants. we had a small area of the store with a projection tv and surround sound set up so people could see what it would be like at home-the same loop of the same video was set up to run over and over, very effective but very taxing to have to listen to for 8 hours per day/5 days per week (a montage of scenes from 'top gun').

I was almost always in design. I designed and built post and beam homes, decorator, kitchen and bath design and professional artist and gallery owner. Now I am retired, but still designing in our not quite two year old home. Working on another 750 sf NH retro lake vibe and having a blast!

During summers and my college years- into my mid-20s- I worked a variety of jobs: Clerk in a candy shop, convenience food store asst manager, bank teller, waitress, bartender. Professionally, I've spent most of my time- 23 years- as a lab manager and research associate on a variety of projects, mostly molecular biology based. I also spent 9.5 years as an ed tech, teaching special ed math in a K-8 school. For the past 8.5 years, I've managed the organic chemistry labs and am a teaching associate at the University of Maine. It's a fairly easy job where, as long as the work is done on time, nobody is looking over my shoulder. I'll probably retire from here in a year or two.

I was actually thinking about this the other night when a group I belong to in FB was taking about our area years ago and a big diary farm. The farm is gone now and the guy made bank.
One of the first parcels of land he sold off was made into the mall ( which unfortunately killed our drive in because it has a theater ).
Anyway I had a job at the department store where my job was literally hanging clothes when shipments came in and if they weren’t all ready on hangers. But I actually loved that job except the GM was a creeper.

I’ve also been a Hoisekeeping Supervisor for a contracted Housekeeping company at a time share and enjoyed that as well.

A housekeeping runner at a timeshare where I delivered requested items for guests. That job had good and bad times because I also had to take care of guest complaints after the housekeeping company left for the day ( I worked for the resort itself). I also filled in for dispatch.

PBX operator as a seasonal job at a resort that years ago had the PGA tour come through. I actually fell into it because I ducked as a front desk clerk because I was very shy at the time but I was good on the phone lol.

Worked as an inventory/ list and found/ liaison between guest a d housekeeping. This was my introduction into the timeshare world and I got a job where my dad worked . But I had started cleaning jif the foyers and then the lady who was the 3 prong position could only work holidays I became during the week then she end up quitting because she got a state job. I loved this job because even though I got the first because of my dad and there was a lot of nepotism there, I showed that I could do more on my own merit. I loved working with my dad but I had to call him by his first name at work it was hilarious.so glad we had that time.

I have worked in banking for several years now, various positions starting as teller and working up to the lending department. I was a social worker for a short while before that. Before that, I was a public school teacher for a long time.
