I never ask personal questions like this here but it seems to be the best place to gather some information about a topic on which I am clueless. So here goes, I hope someone can help...

A family member of mine has not paid their car taxes for the last two times they were due, the town send the bills to a Marshall for collection. They need to be paid by the end of the month. I am helping out this family member by paying these. (That part I don't need guidence on)

There is a PO box listed to pay the Marshall and a phone number. I would prefer to bring cash or a money order to the Marshall so that
A. a receipt can be obtained and
B. there is none of my information (ie checking account #, name) associated with this family members bills.
When I call the number though I get the answering machine of the Marshall at home (I guess Marshalls don't really have offices, here in Connecticut anyway) I could give my family member the cash and have them write a check but they aren't thrilled with the idea of their account number being out there either.

Does anyone have any insight into this type of situation. What is the best way to pay?

Call the tax office and explain that you want to pay these on behalf of the family member and ask your question of how/where to pay with cash/money order. I'm sure you shouldn't have to give your name to ask questions. Once you've got the info you can proceed from there. That's a nice thing you're doing.

I don't understand???? Why can't you just mail a money order to the Marshall and put your family members name on it? You will get a receipt with the money order. I would suggest getting the MO from the post office, filling it out while there and handing it to a postal worker. You should be able to do it so the Marshall will have to sign for it in order to receive it.

I could I guess. I don't know much about money orders. So I'd send it certified mail or something right? Then I'd have proof that they got it plus I think you can track money orders if you need to, but it seems like a pain in the butt to do. I never use money orders. I use checks, that way when they clear I know they got the money plus I have proof. But in this situation a check isn't am option.

Thats a good idea about calling the tax office, I'm sure they deal with this all the time. They are closed today I think. I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Sure. You can even purchase the money order right at the Post Office - kill two birds with one stone.

What town is that? I know people that haven't paid car taxes in years in CT and it's never been sent to a Marshall.

What we did, when paying back taxes on behalf of a relative, was to send a postal money order registered mail. That way, I had the M.O. receipt and the delivery confirmation just in case, but our personal accounts were not involved in any way.

Thank you, I think this is what I will do. I just needed some guidence and it's not the kind of thing you want to ask your friends about KWIM? The DIS is grat for that kind of thing. A huge group of people who i know, but not really. Thanks everyone!;)
