Stupid question but...

If I have passports, should I take the Birth Certificates just in case?

Never had the need for BC with Passport...

Make a copy of the main passport and keep it seperate in case you lose the passport you have a copy to work on.

Thanks din!

I'll be sure to do that. I just don't want anything to prevent us from going. :D

Similar question - I have a passport, my wife has a BC and picture ID, but, since her picture ID is in her married name, and her BC is in her maiden name, there may be a problem with the name difference. Went on a RCL cruise last year and they let us on, but warned it could have been a problem. Does anyone have experience with this?

I'm not trying to be "cute" here, but..............

Unless your wife was married when she was born, her BC better be in her maiden name. They do not change the names on birth certificates. I don't see how anyone could ever say it could be a problem!

I can't see the cruiseline finding a problem with that....90% of people who get married take their spouse's name and their photo ID naturally would be different than what is on their BC.

This must happen all the time. It think it would be more rare to see a married person's current photo ID with their maiden name on (would have kept their maiden name).

Well I'm a bit of a paranoid worry wart (lost my passport in Japan when I was 19 and it was a nightmare) so I take both with me. I use the passport to register with (much easier) as it is easier at the airport as well but then I make hubby carry my B/C in his wallet with him as well and we put the passport's in the safe in the room and use the B/C to take on and off the island with us (most of the time..there are a few times we took the passport with us but I was a wreck) and then if one of us loses our B/C the other can go to the cabin and get the passport! For me you just cant be too safe. (oh yeah did I mention I'm paranoid?):teeth: And while we're doing confessions I have SEVERAL copies of my B/C just in case! LOL

Yeah Yeah I know..I'm a freak! LOL

When it comes to the maiden-name-married-name thing, we Southerners do it right: Southerners tend to keep their maiden names instead of their middle names. Example:

A girl is born Mary Susanne Jones.
She marries a man named Smith.
Most Northerners would use Mary Susanne Smith.
Most Southerners would use Mary Jones Smith (not a hyphenated name, but Jones is used as the middle name).

The Southern way makes more sense because the "original name" is still a part of the picture ID, and it's not a problem for situations like using your birth certificate on a cruise.

I did not realize that is why I made my maiden name my middle once married. I just thought that's how it was supposed to be but I do have friends that dropped their maiden. I thought I had done it wrong. Thanks for that tidbit. And I've had no trouble with name change items - ie - savings bonds that were issued in my maiden name.
