Passports - a different kind of question

I applied for a passport years ago when I went to Germany. It has now been expired for about 4 - 5 years. Would I just have to "renew" my passport where as my DH and 2 DS would have to get their first passport? Is there a different process for new versus renewed passports?

Here are the guidelines for passports. You can renew yours by mail as long as it is less than 15 years old. There are some other requirements listed also, but it is pretty simple.

DW had an expired passport (you should have seen her hairdo! ) while DS and I had never had a passport, but we were able to take care of all of it at the same time. Just read over the forms thoroughly to make sure you are prepared ahead of time. When the agent sent in the forms, DS & I had our birth certificates attached while DW had her expired passport. Otherwise, it was essentially the same process and could all be done together. They also came back in much less time than we were expecting. This was done in late January.
