American officials say Canadians entering the U.S. by car or boat won't need a passport until at least the summer of 2008.
The reprieve comes as officials on both sides of the border grapple with a huge backlog of passport applications.
The new security plan requiring passports was originally supposed to go into effect this January.
But officials say the plan will now be phased in.
Starting Jan. 31, 2008, Americans and Canadians headed south only need to show government-issued photo identification, like as a driver's licence, and proof of citizenship, like a birth certificate.
The passport requirement will come later in the year, after a 60 day notice has been given.
