I just went across the border (rainbow bridge) last weekend, US customs didn't even ask for ID, just where we were going and how long we would be. The Canadians gave us more of a problem getting back into the country.
Though I always carry my passport just in case but do not have them for the kids yet.
You do have to renew your passport 6 months before it expires that is a Canadian Goverment rule and it is in case you get sick or have some other problem, the goverment wants you to have the 6 months covereage.
