We just received our kids passports age 4 & 6. They say not valid until signed. I had them write their names and I co-signed as parent. By signing it did I mess up the passport? :confused3

I was wondering the same thing - I had my 14 year old sign his - but I didn't have the 11 year old sign yet.

My child is too young to sign his/her own passport. How do I sign my child's passport?

In the space provided for the signature, the mother or father must print the child's name and sign their own name. Then, in parenthesis by the parent's name, write the word (mother) or (father) so we know who signed for the child.

I copied the above from the US Dept. of State page.

It's still really not all that clear - I'm assuming from this that if you have a child who IS old enough to sign - they can do so.
It seems like they should be more specific about exactly what they want and send this info with the passport when they process one for a minor - it's in the FAQ section on the website - but didn't find it anywhere in any of the instructions for getting a passport for a child.

I'm wondering about this, too.
When we applied for my son's passport, DH and I had to sign, and where his signature was required, it stated that we should print his name instead of having him sign...he's 12 years old.

He'll be 13 when we cruise, and can sign his own name, but I wonder if he's legally allowed to do so when we receive the passport.

With our kids passports I printed their names and wrote minor then signed my name and wrote mother.

Jane Doe, Minor
Jean Doe, Mother (Jean Doe as I would normally sign)

I got passports for both of my kids (8 & 4 at the time) and let them both sign their own names. They thought that was really cool. We used their passports twice last year in the Dominican Republic and St Maarten and had no problem.

I'm planning on having my 8 year old sign his because he's been writing in cursive for a while but I'll be signing for my DD who's only 3.
