Hi
i followed the directions and it says this VALIDITY

VALIDITY:

1. Passports of nationals of the U.S.A. must be valid on the
date of arrival in the U.S.A.
2. Passports of all visitors must be valid for at least 6
months beyond the date of intended departure from the
U.S.A.

guess that means i have to get him a new passport then !

its valid till 24th oct we fly back 28th april

Reading the following statement from Embassey of the US in London Website it states the following:

Countries with agreements with the United States to extend passport validity for an additional six months

If you are a passport holder from anyone of the following countries, the requirement that your passport be valid for six months beyond your date of departure from the U.S. is waived.

Your passport must be valid on entry into the U.S. If the passport is not valid for the duration of your stay, you will be required to apply for a new passport from your Embassy while in the U.S. If your visit will be of short duration during which time your passport will expire, we recommend that you obtain a new passport before traveling as you will be admitted only until the date on which the passport expires. Such action before you depart for the U.S. will save you the inconvenience of applying not only for a new passport, but also an extension of stay.

I refer you to the text and link in post 15.

It is airline dependant as to whether they adopt the 6 month position or not.
Virgin/BA and others do not require 6 months for example, some others do.
There is no point in quoting the embassy website at check in if their T&Cs state 6 months as this overrides anything else.
