So, my passport is in my maiden name (and it’s still considered a legal document, I’ve sailed and gone overseas with it since I’ve been married) and my vaccine card is in my married name. We got married in January of 2017, so it’s been a few years!

I did some googling a while ago and it seemed like the general consensus (and messaging from Safe Passage) indicated that if your names differed, you just needed to upload a legal doc showing the change (like marriage certificate). I did try to call and email Safe Passage directly, but have never gotten any sort of response.

I wasn’t worried until last night when I was finally able to set up a Safe Passage account- now that I’m in the account, I see that their verbiage specifically says things like “recent name change” and “if your name changed after getting vaccinated” SO now I’m a little worried! Logically, I feel like I should be fine- my passport is still legally valid, I have been vaccinated, and I have documentation proving the name change and that I’m the same person. But the verbiage is making me nervous.

This is such a niche situation, but has anyone sailed in the past (or tried to sail) with their passport in their maiden name and vax card in married? What happened?

(Lost my birth certificate in a recent move so sadly, my passport is my only option)

Is your cruise reservation in your maiden or married name? That’s where the real issue is.

Do you have a Driver’s license in your married name?

Your passport in maiden name + marriage certificate should prove you are you and a citizen.

But I have no experience changing names. Hope someone can help. Have you contacted DCL?

Reservation is in my maiden name, matching my passport. License is my married name. I've travelled a lot with my passport after getting married, including cruising, you just need to make sure your reservation matches your passport :) So I'm not worried about any of that, it's literally just the vax card that added a level of uncertainty.

My wife is in the same exact situation. I emailed them and they responded saying I would just need to upload our marriage certificate.
I think you guys might be talking about two different things when you talk about emailing "them."

OP seems to be asking about Safe Passage. Inspire Diagnostics, who run safe passage, don't care what your passport says. They never see your passport. They're confirming that the name on your vax card matches the name on your reservation, and it sounds like it does. There's nothing to do or upload to Safe Passage.

Reconciling the passport issue is handled thought the check-in process with Disney Cruise Line, outside of the Safe Passage process.

EDIT: It sounds from a later post that you booked your reservation using your maiden name. This was a mistake.

What makes you think grossguy is talking about emailing Disney? My post made it clear that I was talking about Safe Passage, and grossguy doesn't indicate he's talking about something different?

It's definitely not a mistake having the booking match the passport, I've travelled many times this way, and the general consensus has always been that you need to travel under the name on your passport if you're using your passport.

I suspect that you will need to resolve the name issue at the port with your documentation of the name change (marriage license). You aren't likely to get a "clear to sail" through Safe Passage. You might be able to upload documentation to them in advance if you contact, but it may need to be done at the port.

Technically, the government expects you to change your passport within a year after changing your name. So while you are correct about putting the booking in your maiden name to match the passport, you technically are no longer traveling under your legal name (your maiden name is no longer your legal name, especially if you have changed your driver's license so you have no other official identification in that name). After the cruise, I recommend first getting a new copy of your birth certificate and then also getting the name changed on your passport.

Yes, both aspects were being discussed. The specific question was regarding Safe Passage. But I figured even more crucial was the Reservation & ID match. It wouldn’t matter if Safe Passage cleared her if she were to be turned away at the port.

The beauty is someone had actual experience with the situation In question.

Sometimes it gets the conversation is someone responds. Fortunately, it did happen this time.

Would your healthcare provider be willing to give you an additional card with your maiden name?

@lanejudy I'm having technical issues with this thread only. I'm getting notifications of replies and quotes but the thread isn't updating.

Since my reply has been lost to time, I was just asking if there was anything specific that made you think grossguy was talking about something different since my original post specifically stated Safe Passage, and his response didn’t indicate anything different.

I'm also talking about Safe Passage. Yes, they (Inspire) said I can upload the marriage certificate in addition to the vax card because the name on vax card is different from the reservation. Apparently there is a link for what to do in the case of name inconsistency.

OP had to book the cruise under her maiden name because that's what's on her passport. Same as my wife.

I was confused about which things you were saying matched and which you were saying didn't.

I originally thought you were saying: Vax card and reservation under married name, passport under maiden name. In this scenario, you wouldn't have to contact Safe Passage because Safe Passage doesn't look at your passport.

But now I think you were actually saying: Vax card under married name, passport and reservation under maiden name. In this case, you DO need to contact Safe Passage, but not because your vax card mismatches your passport, but because your vax card mismatches your reservation.

Yup, exactly haha. I could have been more clear!

Well no, the correct thing to do is replace all of your IDs when you have a name change (assuming the trip isn't a honeymoon or another vacation right after the wedding).

I mean, this is a pretty condescending remark. He was stating that I (and his wife) booked our cruises a certain way based on the IDs we have.

Passports are still legally valid under your maiden name, I’ve traveled tons with it. There is literally no legal reason to need to update as long as you book the correct way. The ONLY issue here, and my original comment, was because the Vax card throws a new element into the mix.

And I'm saying if your name has legally changed, you shouldn't have done that.

That is not correct.

Within the United States, your passport *alone* is no longer valid. Your passport is valid *only* when used in conjunction with your marriage certificate. "I've traveled and gotten away with it a bunch of times" doesn't change the actual rule.

Destination countries are free to set different rules.
