We have Global Entry for us and our 9,4, and inf. It's great to skip the ridiculously long passport control line with kids after an international flight. I've never been in a situation where it's helped us make a connecting flight, but I can easily see that happening given the average length of US passport control lines.

5 years. We actually have Nexus since we frequent Canada and they automatically enrolled us with GOES as well, which is renewed every 5 years.
