Passport and booking flights question

I need to renew both my children's passports before our August 2015 trip. If I book flights with their current passport numbers will this be a problem? I can't remember if you only put in this data at on line check in or if you also do it at the point you book the flights.......

I have never provided passport details of any kind when booking flights, only when doing online check-in. You will not need to worry about renewing the passports after your flights are booked, however you WILL need new ESTAs once they have new passports.
