Passenger plane/ Blackhawk helicopter crash into Potomac

I know that this is different, but I just got word that another plane has crashed in NE Philly (well north of the DC area). While there are only 2 people on the plane, the concern is with the people on the ground at the time of the crash. It was a Learjet 55 that crashed so it's not as big as the DC crash. It was a medical-related flight to Branson, Missouri.

I flew into DCA last night. I fly in/out of there at least monthly. It's my favorite airport. I actually love coming down the river and seeing Georgetown, or the monuments (depending on the approach), as I come home.

I will post some of what I posted on the Controversial Board.

"I flew in to DCA last night approximately 24 hours after the crash. Our landing path didn't take us over that area of the Potomac but it was surreal knowing that there was such tragedy 24 hours before my plane landed there.

I drive home along the GW Parkway. They have Gravelly Point park closed off as a staging area. Lots of tents set up for the recovery efforts. I did only see two small-ish boats in the water. I couldn't tell if they were rescue boats or what but it was almost 10pm when I drove past so I can't imagine they were pleasure boats.

On my way to the parking garage, I was thinking that there are probably some cars in there with no owners now. No one to get in them and drive home after a trip to KS and uneventful flight. No parents and kids talking about their next skating event and being excited for their future. No flight crews planning on their next trip. Two colleagues won't be planning their next trip to KS for work. No longer spending time with their families and friends. No more. Just no more anything."
Heartfelt statement.

Always eerie and surreal if you are going into an airport after a crash. I was working a flight that landed less than 24 hours after the Asiana 214 crash in SFO. You could see the plane when we taxied, and leaving the airport. Human instinct, couldn't resist looking as your heart skipped a beat. I am still so proud of those flight attendants. They saved so many lives. They did everything right, textbook.

Obviously, my little family loves air travel. My daughter is going to follow in her dad's footsteps. But when tragedies like this happen, hard not to pause and realize this wonderful mode of transportation isn't always perfect and can create pure devastation to so many all at once.

Obviously close to me, in fact my neighbor was on 5191 on her way to her honeymoon. I always have to look up the date, but definitely memorable.

Oh I am so sorry. Definitely hits home.

I live in Philly. Current reporting is that it was a medical flight with 2 pilots, 2 doctors, the patient and a family member. It remains unknown what the situation is on the ground. Lots of damage and fires.

No one is okay. This is a major thoroughfare for Philly. Yes it's a smaller airport where they left from. I'm not sure why that matters that it isn't from Philly International.

Technically to Springfield-Branson airport (Branson is close to an hour south of there). The original story I saw right after it happened is it was en route to Springfield (which was then later been clarified to the airport but the airport is actually in Springfield).

A more recent story says "The jet was en route to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri when it went down. In a statement, Shriners Children's said the child on board had received care from the Philadelphia hospital and was being taken back to her home country of Mexico, along with her mother, when the crash happened. Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico has confirmed all aboard the plane were of Mexican Nationality."

The plane went down so quick after taking off, the videos (which is of better quality in seeing what happened than the DC crash) show essentially a sharp dive down :sad1:

Absolutely doesn’t, any more than it mattered if the plane landing at Reagan crashed into Virginia or DC. But people still felt the need to debate that too. :sad2:

I live near the airport where the plane in Philly took off from. From the reports I have heard from my daughter, who also lives in the area, some of her friends called and said on takeoff it looked like the plane was leaking something, possibly one of the oxygen tanks that were on the flight. Where it went down is less than a half mile from my parents house. I pass that area multiple times a week. The intersection right there is a major N/S road and a major E/W road and both are heavily traveled. The crash could have been so much worse as the plane just missed the two gas stations on the corners. A friend of my grandson was actually at the mall and hit by debris.

I am supposed to fly to Disney World in one month and my daughter is trying to convince me to take the train.

I saw a video taken from a dash camera and it actually looks like a missile dove into the ground and exploded. It was one of the most insane things I've ever seen.

While I know statistically it's safer to drive than fly, I don't know if I can get myself into a plan anytime soon 🙁

To be honest, these plane crashes aren’t gonna deter me from getting on planes in the near future. I had very similar nerves (as in fearing for my life) when I chickened out of a roller coaster at SeaWorld a few years ago. Now, ever since I tried again and went through other similar coasters at different parks, I mustered my courage to get back on that same coaster just last year.

I didn’t let my prior scares from years ago get a hold of me, and the same is true with respect to airplanes and aviation in general. In fact, thanks to POVs (both on coasters and planes), I’m not as much scared or nervous anymore. The risk of dying from both is still low.

Hits close to home as a figure skater, who has crossed paths to some of the SCOB skaters before. I heard that 28/60 passengers were figure skaters, coaches, or their family. I knew tons of people in Wichita for the comp.

While not super publicized or just lost in the news the flags in KS have been half-mast at the request of the Governor from 1/30 until tomorrow evening (1/6).

All victims have been pulled from the river and at least all but 1 had been positively identified as of yesterday. I know black boxes have been recovered and information being gained that led up to it, seemingly every day something new information is coming out. I hope we can gain a good picture as to what led up to it and what was done in the moment so we have information for the future :grouphug:

I hope that it is OK to mention this here, if not, Mods please delete:

Many posters here are aware that I am involved with the American figure skating community, as my daughter is a competitive skater. Our national federation, USFSA, has established financial assistance programs for the families of those killed in the crash. (None of the victims were affiliated with local Figure Skating Clubs in my area, and members of my own family did not know any of the victims personally.)

If you would like to donate to help offset death-related costs for families of the skaters & coaches who died in this crash, the United States Figure Skating Assn. has established a dedicated Family Support Fund for them (this is different from the USFSA Memorial Fund that was set up after the 1961 plane crash, which provides support to any competitive skater who needs financial assistance to continue in the sport.) For more information on the USFSA Family Support Fund: https://secure.qgiv.com/for/usfigureskatingfoundation/event/usfigureskatingfund/

There will also be a major benefit ice show held in Washington, DC at CapitalOne Arena on Sunday, March 2, 2025 to benefit all victims' families (not just those involved in skating) and the First Responders who worked at the scene. For more information on that event and the list of charities it will benefit, please see https://www.usfigureskating.org/new...e-arena-support-victims-tragedy-ronald-reagan
