We are having a problem switching some reservations for our friends that have a family of five. For instance we switched to Boma for my family of four and now she would like to switch there also. When I called for my family they had a ton of times, but when I try for her family there is no availability.

She has a family of five but one of the children is under three and not on the dining plan. I am tempted to book her as a family of four and tell her to say she is so sorry she misunderstood how many she was supposed to book. The 2 year old certainly can squeeze between her parents or her brothers if this restaurant has booths, but we have never been here. I know I will get flamed for this. But what about saying they are a party of six? Do you have a better chance with this? Any suggestions?

A party of 5 takes up the same amount of table space as a party of 6, so that wouldn't help you. Saying they are 4 and then showing up with 5 might work but it could also take away a 6-person table from someone who has an ADR for 5 or 6. There are far fewer tables for parties greater than 4 people.

The tables aren't large anyway so saying that you can squeeze a 3yo onto the table wouldn't really work. Could the 9 of you split up and ask for 3 tables? That might work and they are really good about putting everyone near each other. They do not have booths at Boma and it is a popular restaurant.

Reservations are made by tables. So a party of five would be one table of four and one table two. It's not automaticaly defaulted to a table for six(which are limited). Tables for four and tables for two are probably the most requested tables for reservations (think about resort rooms). You will have to find two tables available for the times your friend wants the reservation.

Call back and ask if they can take one party with a split reservation - one for four and one for two. The reservations will be liked in the system and 99% be right next to each other.

Party size DOES make a difference. As already posted, there are more tables for 2 or 4 than for a parties of 5 and up. Yes, sometimes they can move tables together and create one larger table, but often, the smaller tables are booked up as well. Tables for larger size parties are definitely more limited than the smaller tables for smaller parties.

You also are likely to get a table that doesn't have booth seating, only regular chairs, then the baby would be sitting on someone's lap the entire time.
