My DS is turning 8 tomorrow. For his birthday we are taking him and 2 of his friends to a museum and to see an Imax film. We aren't going to have much time to stop and have cake so I was thinking of letting the kids eat cupcakes in the car on the way back from the museum.

I thought I would decorate the inside of the mini van like a party. What would you suggest I use to decorate?

So far I was thinking streamers and balloons (no helium) taped to some of the side windows. Any more ideas?

How about writing on the windows with car chalk? It washes off very easily.
Happy Birthday to your son !!!:bday: :cake:

Totally write on the car windows! Maybe have a sign on the back that says "Birthday or Bust!" or something else fun. I'm sure you'll get lots of honks as you travel, and your son will think it's really cool. 8 is such a fun age!

Walmart has the car paint/chalk stuff. Also, you coud get those Crayola window markers and let the kids color on the windows or write birthday messages.
What about the cans tied dragging behind the are like they used to do for weddings, that might be fun and noisy.:confused3 (Is that legal still?)
:confused3
My kids once accidently let balloons go out the sunroof and thought it was sooooo funny, if you have one maybe a balloon or two out of the sunroof would be fun.

What about window clings?

I am impressed that you are letting them eat cupcakes in the van! I could not do that...lol...what a mess!

Great idea about the window clings.

Re mess. The van is almost 6 years old. The carpet already looks like a battle zone!:rotfl:

It also helps that we have free carwashes through DH's work. :cool1:

Dollar Tree has it.

Thanks - I will try Dollar Tree and can check Walmart if ours doesn't have it.

Make or buy a fun CD of "party" songs.

Make or find some fun car games (license plate bingo, I Spy or something like that).

If it's an "off" day (like a Thursday afternoon or something) see if you can rent a limo or rental car for the afternoon if you can get a good deal.

Maybe have a small gift for him to open every 10 miles or something like that (or when you pass a landmark or something).

Have a portable DVD player? Eat popcorn and watch a show on the way (or other "junk" food).

Load up on water bottles or juice boxes to keep everyone hydrated.

If you're really ambitious, stop and get something to eat on the way up there (or make something easy at home and put it in "take out" containers).

How about planning an "unplanned" stop along the way to pick up another friend or family member to join in the fun?

I'll keep thinking for you! Good luck! :goodvibes

You could make ice cream cone cupcakes so they would be slightly easier to eat. Or forget the cake & swing by DQ or somewhere for Blizzards or milkshakes instead. Let them get cookies or something mixed in & call it ice cream cake to go!

have goodie bags with a few dollar store toys in it for the kids to play around with... did something similar one year but didn't decorate the car.... should have it is a great idea! And I'll second the cooler of water bottles, another good idea.

Thanks for the great ideas! The DIS is such a great place.:yay:

I found the window paint at Walmart in the party goods section. :cool1: We are going to have cooler with snacks and water/juice boxes. I may tie something to the antenna since we don't have a sun roof.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

The party went great. I purchased hanging twirling decorations at the dollar store and taped them to the ceiling. I ended up just throwing the balloons all over the floor in the back row. The kids had fun playing with and popping the balloons.

Here are some pics.
