Partially used tickets from 2020 + Magic Key Upgrade

I'm trying every word combination that I can figure out, but I'm not finding the answer I need :)

I bought a 2020 Military Salute ticket in Jan 2020. These don't have the expires-13-days-after-first-use rule, so I don't always use them all at one time; I may use one day in January, two more in June, and the last day in November or such. I bought my ticket in Jan 2020, and used my first day at that time.

Now, the Magic Keys come out, and we can use non-expired tickets to "pay down" the price of an AP. Woo hoo! An AP/MK would actually make financial sense for me for 2021-2022! AP/MK, here I come!

Looking at the fine print, it says the AP/MK expiration date will "back date" to the date the "pay down ticket" was first used. The first day I used my ticket was 1/28/2020; in other words, pre-pandemic. 1/28/2020 + 365 days = 1/27/2021... Which would mean my AP/MK would be expired before I ever bought it.

Still with me here? Okay, good.

So, I call the ever helpful (and often conflicting) Disneyland ticket help line. I talk to a nice young guy who assures me that the AP/MK expiration date will be 1 year *after* the date of first use. Woo hoo!

.... But then I go to pay for my AP/MK, and it says the AP/MK will expire 1/27/2021 (in other words, 7 months ago).

So, has anyone had a similar issue? Did the expiration date adjust once you used the AP/MK for the first time? I'm all ready to buy the new pass, but I'm freaked out by it showing a past expiration date before I've even paid for it!

I wouldn't do it. The way the MK ticket upgrades (and the upgrades to the previous annual passes) are designed to work is to backdate to the first day of use of the ticket being upgraded from. It is stated clearly in the terms and conditions and CMs have been informing people of such during in-person upgrades. One mathematical fix for your situation since you had special tickets would be to add 13 1/2 months to the MK expiration date to compensate for the 13 1/2 months the parks were closed which would set the expiration sometime in March 2022. Another way of looking at the situation would be to realize that even excluding all the dates of the park's closure, there are still almost 6 months between your first day of use and today, so an upgrade to a full year Magic Key would extend only another 6 months and again expire sometime in March 2022. The system is programmed strictly to calculate based off dates though, so that's why it's feeding you that 1/27/2021 expiration. I have no doubt that if you upgrade that ticket you will only end up with an expired Magic Key. With everything I have been reading, I wouldn't expect Disney to provide any accommodation for your situation, but if they were to do so, you would probably have to show up at a ticket booth and try to work it out in person with them and even then I would say odds of success seem slim and by the math and their own terms and conditions coupled with the extraordinary circumstances the best they could offer you would be a March 2022 date. As you are not local, this wouldn't be a convenient solution in any case. Also it isn't really a solution I am suggesting Disney would think of or implement; that was all mostly to point out what your ticket would be "worth" even in the best to your favor manipulated circumstances.

ETA: I and others in my family have in fact upgraded tickets to annual passes in the past, and the annual pass was always backdated to the date of first entry using the tickets upgraded from. Also, I believe in the past that there used to be southern CA resident tickets that could be used for an extended time beyond the usual 13 days that could also be upgraded to annual passes that were always backdated to the first day of use even if it was weeks or months before the upgrade was done. I never personally had such a ticket but definitely read about them.

APS always backdate to the first date of use, unless there was an error by the CM. So you cannot use the current military ticket to upgrade.

The prior poster is correct that there used to be a CA resident ticket that could be upgraded to an AP but Disney changed that this year. this year'sCA ticketis not upgradable

After talking with the young man last night, and reading the replies here, I felt very "iffy" about what he told me. I called the AP/MK-specific line this morning. She said to upgrade while I'm in the park instead of from home, and the expiration date should change to the correct date at that time, and if it doesn't, then I can speak with a lead at that point to get it adjusted. There was some confusion since it was a non-expired 2020 Salute.

Fingers crossed that it goes as planned once I get to the parks!

good luck but I don’t believe anything a phone CM says. I’ve had people say it will go in “notes” but when you get there, nothing.

CMs are only as good as their training and when they laid everyone off, they didn’t get everyone back.

That's part of the reason I called twice and took it to a lead thismorning. If it doesn't work, bummer. If it works, woooo hoooo!

I also don't believe most companies transfer people to leads or supervisors. Yes, I am cynical. :D

Totally possible that she didn't! But she also sounded annoyed and said that whomever she was talking to/messaging with "just isn't understanding what I'm asking," and clarifying multiple times with me. She sounded convincing. I guess we'll find out a few weeks.

I’m also facing the same dilemma! I’ve spoken to two different CMs, once in the chat and another over the phone. Both said the same thing to me- The Magic Key expiration date would be 1 year from the day you upgrade it. I’ve also made it very clear both times that they were multi day tickets and the first time I used it was Feb 2020. The CM on the phone specifically said to me that with the multi day tickets from 2020, they’ve adjusted the expiration date if it didn’t fix it on its own. I’m not going until October so I’ll find out then. Please let me know how it goes for you!

I'm 9 days away, so I'll let you know as soon as I try!

I just got back and am an official Magic Key holder! Woot woot!

I went to the window at the end of my last day (because there were no MKey reservations for that day). I told the lady that I understood I needed to upgrade on the app, but before I did, I wanted to make sure they would adjust the expiration date. She said they do so all day long! I bought it, and she the date changed in about 2 minutes. Easy peasy!
