Looking at returning to WDW this October, one more visit during the school year while DD's still in elementary school.
Our visit last Oct was just DD and I and I missed my boy! He'll be in 9th grade next school year! He won't be missing as much school as DD.
If he joins us he'll head home several days before us.
Looking at staying onsite *especially if we get FD, had it for our 1st and 2nd visit :)
How would that work, he won't need as many days on his ticket, what if we get FD? What about pre booking FP+? ME back to MCO - not sure how I feel about him doing that on his own, could he get on the plane on his own - to security I mean? I know without a ticket no one goes through there, he'll be 14.

FD? With 3 Disney adults would a mod be cheaper than a value after upgrading the QS plan if staying at a value? Even if one of the three isn't there the whole time? We upgraded to the reg plan when staying at POP last Oct, with two Disney adults it was still more economical staying in a value.

And my mom might join us, not sure all or part of the time.

Call to reserve your room and tell them the situation. Ask them how it's handled.

My kids have flown by themselves since they were young-not from Disney. ME will drop him near the airline counter where he'll need to check his luggage unless he can pack everything in a carry on. You can look at a map of the airport so he can familiarize himself with the layout.

I know nothing about the FD because we've never done it.

Make sure that your son is ok with missing school. Freshman year for my kids was tough. Teachers were much more demanding. If he plays sports, he may not be able to miss any days. Coaches are pretty fierce about that.

Thanks, their fall break is 10/16 & 17, fly out on the evening of the 15th or early on the 16th.
He'd fly home the following Tue or Wed. So two or three missed school days.
He'll likely play football.
9th here is still junior high.

Dining could be really fun for you. Dining is tied to the nights you stay and has to be the same for everyone in the room. So even though he's not staying the whole time, you will have meals for him. That means you can do some signatures or just more TS to use up his credits. You have a couple options on how to do that. While he's with you, go to TS 2x a day. That may leave you with more QS after he's gone. Or, use as the plan suggests while he's there, and use the extra credits when he's gone.

As to flying, I believe the airlines still do unaccompanied minor type flying. There is an extra fee, but the flight attendants are aware they are alone and help them. This could be helpful if he has a connecting flight. They will go with him from one gate to the other and hand him off to another adult.

I'm not sure how the football coaches handle absences at your son's school. When my son played 9th grade football, if a player missed practice(s) and was a starter, he'd get knocked down to 2nd or 3rd string. His coaches were pretty strict about not missing practice. Football is a big deal to the kids. He may not want to miss. My son refused to go anywhere during football or track seasons.
I'm not trying to put a damper on your plans, just trying to give you a heads up.
