Recap of places and players:
Me and DH for impromptu anniversary trip, didn't bring kids...
We stayed at OKW on 2/14 and 2/15,
then AKL concierge on 2/16 for our anniversary,
then back to OKW for 2/17 and 2/18
(it was a little jumping around, but we couldn't get 2/16 at OKW, but I was GLAD because AKL was GREAT!)
I will use my standard rating scale:
10- everything perfect...food, service, atmosphere (very rare)
9- excellent, almost perfect
7-8- very good, overall great experience
5-6- mediocre, might not return
3-4- bad, not returning
1-2- should close this place down!!!
2/17/03
Had breakfast in the concierge loung at AKL (see part 2 for review) and walked around the Lodge, trying to extend our great experience. We spoke with a CM on the student program from S. Africa at the Arusha Rock, which is a viwing area of the animals, she was delightful.
We then went to Animal Kingdom, continuing with the safari theme...after riding several rides including Dinosaur and Primeval Whirl we headed for Flame Tree BBQ.
2/17- lunch, Flame Tree BBQ:
We couldn't decide if we wanted to eat at Tusker or here, but after a review of the menus we chose this place. Besides the smell lured us in. I had the BBQ chicken sandwich which came with corn on the cob and baked beans. It was awesome!!! I especially liked the beans, which had a sweet/smokey BBQ flavor and bits of chewy pork in it (not pork fat!!). DH had the pulled pork with the same condiments. Service was friendly and efficient even with the large crowd assembling. Seating behind the restaurant was a peaceful retreat, well-themed with paper-like lanterns and colorful chairs, tables and gazebos and fountains!!
Overall rating: 8 for fast food this place rocks! Would come back.
Checked back into OKW, had to switch rooms one because wreaked like smoke (and was a non-smoking room). In addition we were told it was near the hospitality house, but it was not even close!! We got a better room in bldg 14 (our favorite). We cleaned up and went to WL for Artist Point!!!
2/17 dinner, Artist Point:
We've stayed alot at Wilderness Lodge and couldn't believe we've never eaten at Artist point!! We were seated near the window which overlooks the lake...lovely. The place has western motif murals and mission style lanterns and furnishings. Our waitress was outgoing and attentive. We also noticed they had "runners" (people who's job is to bring out the food) so everything was hot...which IMO is important!! I had the smoked portabella soup which was creamy but not heavy and had shtakes (had to spell this wrong because the first 4 letters make up a swear word and it was ****'ed out...funny!!!). This was pure heaven and the soft, fresh sourdough bread that came to the table was enough for a meal for me...but I indulged myself and had an entree and dessert too!! I had the beef filet with mushroom bread pudding (kinda like stuffing) and pumpkin. The meat was tender and flavorful. DH had the buffalo steak which I think came with sweet potato gratin. He shook his head in the affirmative when I asked if he liked it (too busy chewing to answer...so that's a good thing). For dessert our server brought "on the house" the famed berry cobbler for our anniversary. It was like a giant blueberry muffin top and LOADED with berries and vanilla ice cream. YUM!!
Overall rating: 9, will come back again...loved it! The service was close to a 10!
Next review, ABC Commissary and California Grille
