If there are bunch of people that will have to wait while you "sort it out", do you still back into a parking space?

I just do not get the people who must back. Either way you back up, why do it when it takes the MOST time and inconveniences the most people? Are you not aware of your surroundings?

I never back into a parking space. But if I were someone who liked to back into a space, I wouldn't do it if it looked like there were other vehicles that would have to wait for me to get out of the way.

I started a thread about backing into parking spaces a while ago and some people said that they have to back into parking spaces because of the type of vehicle they have.

I still don't get it.

I do at the train station and so do most people. It's easier at night to pull straight out when there are more people walking. Do we need to wait for each other, yep. But it's usually not an issue unless you get that one person that needs to pull forward and straighten it out half a dozen times. :lmao:

If I want to back in, I back in- BUT I'm really good at it and it doesn't take any time at all. My husband ALWAYS backs in out of habit, with his work truck he MUST (policy) so he's just in that habit.

I don't back into parking spaces.

At the risk of sounding sexist :rotfl:... Have you ever noticed that almost all the people who back into parking spaces are men? What does this mean?

Why in the world was it made a policy?

Too many accidents involving people backing out of spaces with work trucks- but they even made it policy for private vehicles in their parking lots. I used the "but at one point either way you are backing up" arguement with my husband too!

I find a spot where I can pull through. No matter what you think, backing into a spot takes more time then pulling forward into a spot. I saw a woman that pulled past a spot preparing to back into it and someone behind her took the spot. I just laughed. It did appear she was not taking the spot. She was giving the person that "took" her spot a talking to as I walked by and I just said "looked to me too that you didn't want the spot" and kept walking :lmao:.

It doesn't take THAT much longer if you know how to do it properly.

I don't back in because I find it rude.

It is still a 2 step process vs a one step and it does take longer--which is the argument so many people seem to use on these threads--just heading that one off at the start. It is also 'unexpected' in most cases and I have seen too many near accidents with people backing into spots because of that.

At work I park in a public ramp. This is what most of us do, too. And there is always that 1 person who takes forever. :rolleyes1

I almost always get it in 1 move. I usually like to back in no matter where I am because I have a small car. someone with a huge truck or SUV usually ends up parked next to me. So it is easier later to pull out forward. But if there are cars that would have to wait behind me, I'll just pull in regular. If I really want to back in, I let them pass then pull back out & back in. ZDon't do that very often tho. Not worth the hassle.

It is easier and safer to back into a parking spot than out of it which is why many companies have this policy with work trucks. What is usually ignored with the "you have to reverse at some point regardless" argument is that when you back in you are reversing from the open isle into the enclosed space (enclosed by vehicles) which allows you a greater field of vision than the other way around.

When you are reversing out of a parking spot you usually have a car on either side blocking your vision and in the case of smaller cars you are often next to a much larger vehicle. You can pull straight out if you have reversed in. At the same time while reversing in you are in the wide open isle and have a clear vision on all sides while you are backing into the space.

This is assuming you are a good driver and can pull straight back into the space without having to pull forward, then backward, than forward, and so on to actually get yourself between the lines.

ETA: If you do buy into the you have to reverse at some point anyway argument than it goes both ways. You will have to wait for someone to back into or out of a spot at some point anyway so does it matter which it is?

People backing into parking spots is one of my pet peeves!!

Drives me crazy! :headache:

How long is it taking people to back into a parking space...seriously?! I agree that it takes longer, but is it really that big of a deal? What are we talking about - an extra 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute (if it's taking that long, then I agree that backing in is not a great option).

FTR, I usually pull in/pull through with my personal vehicle. I usually back in with an ambulance per department policy. When I back in with my personal vehicle I'm adding MAYBE 10-15 seconds at the most to my total time "in the way."

This is one of those things that I never realized was controversial until I read about it on the Dis. :confused3

Fire Dancer--thanks for that explanation which actually makes sense but no one has ever given me:thumbsup2

I rarely back into parking and the only time I have done it when people had to wait to get past was at Girl Scout Camp because it was policy that we had to.

Obviously they are talking about people who have no idea how to back into a parking space. I would guess it would take MAYBE 10 extra seconds... but my money would be on more like 5.
