We're going to Chicago next weekend. The hotel we have reservations at charges $30 a day for parking. There are dozens of public parking garages near the hotel (downtown, Michigan Ave. area) that are around $15 a day.

Would you leave your car in one of these parking garages?

Yes your car will be fine. I've lived in Chicago all my life and never once had an incident in a parking garage. And I've parked at all hours of the night.

Take the $30. We were there last weekend and payed $49. A night for parking.

Yup, our hotel (the Hilton on Michigan) was $45, I believe. That's why we took the train. ;)

Oops, I was wrong...it was $43 dollars a day and valet was $55. ;)

I want the address of the $15 garage!!! That is incredibly cheap for Chicago. Are you sure that isn't for the first 2 hours?

That's what I was thinking. I'm also a born and bred Chicagoan, and I've never seen that rate for 24 hrs. Parking in the Hancock is around $30 overnight, I think.

There are garages that will charge 15 for the day. I've seen them in Chicago. Definitely NOT on Michigan Avenue but in other parts of downtown, yes they exist.

When does their day end? That's likely an office hours rate and they may not offer 24-hours.

Absolutely cannot stand driving in Chicago. Hop on the train.

49 a night? I've never seen a rate that high in the city before.

We were staying at The Talbott and the $49. was for valet overnight parking. There was a self parking garage around the corner for $32 I think. We payed the extra by choice to save time.

:confused3 I'm not lying about the parking. It's an "Earlybird Special"... if you are IN by 6am but before 8am, and don't leave before 10pm or something like that. $15 a day.:thumbsup2

I've lived in the Chicago area all my life and have never had an issue with a parking garage. I believe you, but I have never seen a $15 rate before! I guess we never get down there early enough to take advantage of something like that.

We are going to Navy Pier tomorrow and as usual, we will be stuck paying the $25 or so for a few hours. :sad2:

How many nights are you going to be there? Wouldn't the hotel garage be more convenient?

Do the $15 garages get filled up quickly?

Enjoy your weekend!

I would double check the $15 rate because usually the early bird special also has a certain time that you have to leave by also, and is not applicable for 24 hour rates.

Also, I don't know what you plan on doing but if you want to drive anywhere during your visit the hotel I'm sure has in/out privileges but the parking garage will not.

So you have to be there before 8am? What time are you planning on getting there? Are you familar with the traffic going into the city that early in the morning?

I agree.. I would double check the early bird rate. I live in the North Michigan Ave area and walk by these garages daily and most of them have a requirement that you must leave between a certain time (usually something like after 5PM and before 8PM). I have never seen an early bird rate which includes overnight parking.

If you would like to tell me which garage you are looking into, I may be able to walk by it tomorrow and check out the rates for you.

I think you need to double check the requirements. "IN by 6 am but before 8 am" makes no sense. :confused3 If you are in by 6 am, you are definitely in before 8 am. Do they mean between 6 and 8 am.?

Yeah I was wondering about that myself. And the "not leaving by 10pm". Are you sure that doesn't mean leave before 10pm? I really find it hard to believe that you can park for all day and overnight for $15, unless it's some hotel special. A few years ago, I think I paid $20 to park at the museum campus for a few hours.
