Do they charge to park right up to closing

Just to make sure, you're asking if they charge to park in the theme parks even if you come at the end of the day? I believe the answer is yes.

Standard parking is $22, if you want to be further up then it's preferred parking which is $45. You do not have to pay for standard parking if you're an AP holder or on site. If you wish to pay for preferred parking and you are an AP holder or staying on site, then you'll pay the difference.

I personally would never pay for preferred parking because 1) it's so expensive and 2) you're not that much closer most of the time then regular parking

It all depends on the day. I've went to the parks at 6pm and the toll booths have been empty and you can park for free. I've also went in at 8pm and they were still there and you had to pay. Odds are within a couple hours of park closing that the toll booths will be closed and you can park for free, but never count on that. Expect to pay right up until the park closes

I had the same experience. There were a few nights we were going over to AK at around 8PM. Sometimes the booths had people in them, sometimes not. If there were people in them we were stopped and asked to pay or prove we were on site.
