I had a similar experience last fall, but in reverse. I had a hotel reservation and a 5-day MYW ticket registered on MDE for a December trip. I later decided to go to WDW for 2 days in September to hear Off Kilter and other entertainment acts before they were let go. I registered my 10-day non-expiring park hopper that had never been used so I could make FP+ reservations for the earlier trip. I had to exchange the paper 10-day ticket at guest services for a plastic ticket, and that's the ticket I used to enter the parks for 2 days in September - hopping on one of the days. I didn't have a Magic Band.
It wasn't until I started planning my December FP+ reservations in October that I learned that my unused 5-day ticket was expired! A call to Disney told me my 5-day ticket had been used for the 2 days, even though it was at home, and the ticket expired 14 days later! AND - the system also used one day of my 10-day ticket on the day I park hopped!
I had to email WDW to get it straightened out, but the fix was to my benefit. I picked up a new 5-day MYW ticket at Guest Services in December, and they didn't deduct a 2nd day from my 10-day ticket that I actually used in September. However, the fact that the system used a ticket that was at my home and not the one I actually scanned seems goofy to me!
